Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

I am fairly new to Floyd rose bridges. But after owning a jackson SL2 pro for a few weeks. I find myself getting frustrated with the hassle. I like the ability to dive and pull up but really miss being able to change tunings on the fly. What are y'alls opinions on floating locking trems? If I could find a vintage style trem that held up to dive bombing. I think I would like it better.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

I grew tired of locking trems back in '92 or so.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

Nope. But I have enough guitars with Floyds that I can cover the tunings I like, and I also have several hardtails, so I have that base covered too.

And once you string up a Floyd enough, you figure out how to do it quicker and easier.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

If you want to change tunings much you should ditch the floating-system IMO.
Unless like already posted, that you're going to have specific guitars for each tuning.

Floating trems are not a hassle if you learn their idiosyncrasies, but it takes time and/or a commitment.
Guitars in general have plenty of idiosyncrasies all on their own, so adding a bunch more might-well not be for your situation atm.

I only play floaters, all floyds/edges, but there's also some good fixed double-lockers that would suite me just fine.
You could get a tremol-no to lock-up that floyd at parallel/dive-only. That will make your rookie-floyd life easier. lol

So good yet so **** haha.

I like them i just get over setting them up.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

You should set a Floyd up to the tuning you play most in, then have a hardtail to playing other tunings on. You could also get a tremolno, which would make your life easier. I love my floyd, but I know my next guitar is going to be a hardtail

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

I had two guitars with them, a MIJ Jackson and a Prestige Ibanez.

Even a Tremol-No wasn't enough to endure their constant annoyance.
Sold them and I'll probably never own a guitar with a Floyd Rose again.

Hardtails for me all day long.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

Give it a bit more than a few weeks. It does take some getting used to. And yeah, changing tunings on the fly just isn't going to happen. I have a simple version of trem stoppers (I.e. L bracket, a bolt and a nut) that I can set for things like that, but I mainly use it for recording and when changing strings.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

first guitar had a German Floyd Rose trem. nothing but FRs ever since.

no blocking. no de-tuners. no gadgets. straight-ahead simple and floating, the way Floyd intended.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

within 2 weeks of getting one of the nicest guitars I've ever owned in 1986

can't stand them

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

I have an Ibanez Rg4 with an Edge III them
It was fun for Jeff Beck warbles for about two weeks
Every 6 months or so I pull it down
Wipe the dust off
Play it for an hour
And back to the wall

so is it boring/stable/both?

my first guitar (1984) (strat) had a trem, my second (1991) a floyd rose II, my 3rd an OFR (2007), my 4th fixed (2012), my 5th (2014) edge 7-string zero-ii. The one which gave me lots of headaches was the 7-string Ibanez till woods/springs/whole system break in and settle. After that it has been as stable as the rest of guitars, or even more.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

I did several years ago. It coincided with finding a trem that keeps each string in tune to each other as it is used- a TransTrem. Now it is hard to go back to regular trems. The double ball string system is also a much easier, elegant solution.

Never been a big fan of the original first run Ibby Edge 7-string on my 1990 Universe. Now that FR makes one with a similar finish, I've been thinking about swapping it out.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

Never. My preferred one is Ibanez Edge.

Nope, don't use tremolo other than occasional dive bomb in between practice. They are just nice to look at.

Re: Anyone ever get tired of locking trems?

I do like the running stability so I may just block it off for dive only.
