After following the SD SLUG thread, i accidently stumbled upon the El-Diablo humbucker.

http://customshop.seymourduncan.com/el-diablo/

Everything reads like it would be something i might like.

I always wondered how a super hot JB (A2 powered) might sound.
And now, here we have an A2 powered blade unit at 22k !

Has anyone ever played with one ? heard it ? seen it in person ?

Dan Donegan the Lead guitar player in the band Disturbed used one and they came stock in his sig guitars I believe. Also I think Scott Ian from Anthrax used one.

Scott endorses it... Some of his washburn sigs came with it. But nothing of note in his catalog was ever recorded with it. Hell in a recent rig rundown by premier guitar every guitar he had had a JB in it.

Was that the same interview that he mentioned the Duncan Designed in his Signature models sounding the same as the JB? ;)

He also said that he had no idea what was in the neck slot of his guitar... yeah that one

Sure I've seen it in person. It just doesn't appeal to me. It's a weird pickup, as it seems like it is something that just can't find a home. It started out as the Iommi model, until he moved on. Then Ian jumped on it after he already had the 'original' El Diablo (an overwound Demon)...yet Ian still keeps JBs in many of his guitars.

I'd put it in the neck with a SLUG in the bridge.

Any idea if any spec's changed for Ian ?

Re: Anyone ever seen a Duncan El-Diablo ?

Not to my recollection. Doing a little digging around the Internet or asking MJ directly would be the BEST confirmation.

On a side note, the one time I visited the Hard Rock Cafe I saw something really weird; a Jackson shaped like a PRS SE, with what looked like a Full Shred in the bridge and some Duncan Designed pickup in the neck, which had been donated by Ian himself.

Not so weird those were his JJ models that were his sig series for awhile from Jackson. He had a few others too like the nocaster which was a Surf caster with a humbucker in the bridge that he used too.

Ask the Custom Shop to swap out the magnets and install something like an Alnico 8 mag and place it up near the neck with a SLUG down in the bridge position? :-)

Re: Anyone ever seen a Duncan El-Diablo ?

There were several of us using them a few years back, use the search function. You most likely would NOT want to use it as a neck pickup, even with the Slug in the bridge position. This pickup is sort of a mish-mash of a JB and a DMZ Super3, and yeah, the JB works in the neck, but... just trust me. It's hot and thick in the mids and gots lotsa compression. Chunky bottom end, but not super tight, and it has a bit of the upper mid cut like a JB, but not as bright on the top end. Putting A8's in one and then in the neck is just... SMH.

I can also confirm that the SHTI-1 (Iommi) and the SHSI-1 (El Diablo) are the same thing.

Good pickups for sure.
