Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

Re: Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

Some of the 50's and 60's amps including the aforementioned Fender had three speaker setups. I wouldn't even try to guess the ohms of those speakers. I got to ask what is your end game? What are you tring to get out of 3 speakers you can't get out of two or even one?

Just trying to see if anyone else has done it. Having never heard a three speaker setup, it's impossible for me to say what I'd expect from it.

Re: Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

Oh krikey...just wire up 3 and be done with it. People judge and worship at the exact ohms alter when a slight mismatch means dick about 99.99% of the the time. Or to quote Frank Zappa.."shut up and play yer guitar."

Nope, can't split equal with different impedances, it's that darn physics thing again/still. I actually answered this in my first post.

Huh?

If the 16 ohms are in parallel and 8 ohm in series with the pair, that's total of 16 ohms. Pair of 16 ohms get half the output and 8 ohm gets half.

Each of 16 ohms get 25%, but because there is two of them, that's total of 50%

Or is there something I missed.

Re: Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

It'd have to be unbalanced... a 15" or high performance high wattage speaker in the 16ohm position

Alternatively, you COULD use some kinda crossover

You're right, each of the 16 ohm speakers gets 25% and the 8 ohm gets 50%, so, it's not balanced. I"m confused, but if that's what you want go for it.

The Tweed / Brown Bandmaster and Vibro King someone mentioned later use three 8 ohm speakers for a total load of 2.6 ohms.

I meant that if those two 16 ohm speakers are same and 8 ohm is different speaker, in same room or cab, rig would be tonally balanced.

Re: Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

So, why not just use a 2-12 cab and save some cost and weight?

For the thrill of the hunt of course. The perfect guitar/amp/pedal is only perfect so long as you don't find it. Once you find it, you start to want something new.

Re: Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

think a cab with 2 X 10s @16 plus 1 X 12 @ 8 would be greeat....get the response and sparkle of the 10s plus the full low end from the 12...still have to super cool the pair of 10s...maybe....

I was thinking along those same lines except, I think I'd do two 8's or 10's @ 4 ohms, in series, with that series pair in parallel with an 8 ohm 12". That would give equal power distribution through both branches for a total 4 ohm cab. Something like two 30 watt 8's with a 60 watt 12".

Re: Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

I toyed with the idea of 2 greenbacks and a vintage 30 (the 10inch versions) in a marshall JTM600 3x10 combo. Vintage 30 has high power handling and sensitivity so thought it could balance out. When I got into it, it was easier just to get a different amp.... Now have a jcm800 1x12 combo with 1x12 extension.

Those Celestion 10's aren't serious guitar speakers, or so Ive heard

Two 30w speakers in series has max 30w power handling. So it would still be 60w total, and just 30w for 12" would be enough.

For higher power handling you need equal or more wattage for both sides.

Re: Anyone Ever Try a 3-Speaker cab?

It's early and I need coffee, but I think 2X 30W speakers in series or parallel can handle 60W, if not, please explain.
