Anyone for some Rootbeer?

Just finished building another one last week. This is the one you've all been waiting for. Some of you may be disappointed because it doesn't have a unique body shape or size. No chambering. No 5 ply binding. No tricked out electronics either...not even a tone bypass switch, or a p/p for splitting the pups. It's basically just a LP...mahogany body, maple top, single cream binding, HH, 2 vol, 2 tone, 1 three-way selector switch, stop tail. I did add a few minor upgrades from a LP Standard however...

Here's the specialty menu:
Flame maple top;
Belly cut;
Polyurethane finish;
Gold Foil humbuckers. Man, these really sound great in this guitar. (You might recall that I originally put them in one of my other recent builds, the chambered small body LP);
Compensated bone nut;
Neck shape is a little thicker than the stock "slim taper" neck, it's not asymmetric or "V" either this time;
The neck is obviously bolt-on;
Schaller roller bridge. I really like this bridge because each string's roller is adjustable side to side so I can create any string spacing at the bridge that I want;
Grover tuners;
Split Diamond head decal, rather than the crown like on most Standards;
Schaller strap locks. I use these on all of my guitars, yes every one. Mainly because they are THE BEST. I have lots of straps but only 5 or 6 are my favorites, so these get the working end of the strap locks and I can use any of them with any of my guitars (I think I've got over 50 now).

All hardware is gold plated except for the pups. I kept the chrome covers to help set off the gold foil.

Sorry about the sideways pics, I can't figure out how to rotate them. You'll just have to deal with it.

Re: Anyone for some Rootbeer?

So how do those foils sound in there

They are actually very nice. I didn't like them in the orange LP, maybe something to do with the chambers (?), I don't know. This one's a solid body so it must make a difference with these pups. They don't have the tone that I have read is typical, however. They have a very full, rich tone but with a bit of airiness and bite to the top end. I think the fullness is coming from the mahogany. The particular slab of mahogany that I used on this guitar as well as a couple others seems to be very warm toned.

I'd bet that the foils would really sound crisp and airy in an all maple, thin solid body, with a 25.5" scale.

But nevertheless, they do sound great in this guitar.

Another awesome one Doc! Really gorgeous! :fing2:

Followup question on the Gold Foils... where would you put their output comparatively? I put Gold Foil single coils in my Strat build last year and I noticed that they're kinda quiet. Are the humbuckers in PAF territory for loudness?

The output sounds very much in the PAF territory or even stronger, although they only measure about 6.0k ohms (if that really means much). They certainly don't sound any quieter than any PAF type bucker I own.

Another fine craftsman. There are quite a few kickin around this particular shop.

Doc, this is another great one..... and right up my alley. I love everything about it. Question.... do you ever build guitars with a set neck? If so, I might just unapologetically ask you to build me one in the future. Your work is amazing.

Thanks for the compliment.

I haven't built a set neck yet. I really like the advantages of bolt on necks. First of all, they are a little easier to work with. But mainly, I like that if anything happens to the neck...drop the guitar while playing, bump into it while it's sitting on its stand, etc and the head is cracked, rather than try to repair it (if it even can be repaired) it can just be replaced. If there is any tonal differences between set and bolt on, it would seem that there is a little more snap to the bolt on...I like that. That's also why I like having maple tops. I might even try an all maple guitar one of these days.

PS: I love that quote by Einstein.

Re: Anyone for some Rootbeer?

I apologize for asking a dumb question but did you make that guitar from scratch?

Re: Anyone for some Rootbeer?

Yes. My first was a 12 string jumbo acoustic a little over 50 years ago. Lately I've been concentrating on electrics...either solid or chambered. This one is solid. The previous three or four were chambered. You can check out a couple of my recent chambered builds posted a couple days ago on this forum: "One of my latest builds", and "6MONGBD". Over the past several years I've posted a few more of my builds with some radical designs, but this one "brought me back to the basics".

Wow that’s simply amazing. Great work. I live in a suburb of Nashville. Would like to see that in person if you are close.

In Calif. Not planning on going to Nashville, but it would be truly fun.
