Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

I am pretty sure that my next project is a Mohogany tele with a maple/rosewood neck and dual humbuckers. I like the density of mohogany in my Les Paul but I've not experimented with that wood in a tele. The extra weight wont bother me.. my friggin 77 LP weighs a ton! :laugh2: :32:

I plan on putting a JB/Phat Cat pickup combo in this guitar. If the JB does not work out then I might use a Custom.. never sure about pickups until I actually hear them in the guitar.. and then some.. I have had several pickups in teles but they were ash, poplar and alder. The JB sounded good with all of those woods and I am pretty sure it'd kick booty in mohogany. This would be a backup for my LP and I also want the bridge to be a little more oomph-ish :saeek:

Anyone have a similar setup?

Belive it or not fender actually made a few Mahogany Tele's in the 60's! Im not positive but I belive that Seymour's tele-Gib is mahogany...if you do a search on the forum you can find a few pics of it, and it looks like mahogany...it also has a stop bar/tune-o-matic bridge set up as well as a JB/Jazz set up...that guitar sounds great!

Good luck brother, keep us all posted...I'm about to kick my Tele project into high gear!

after I posted that, I relized that you have more that likely taken a fwe of the pics I have seen of that guitar! Look at it, it does look like mahogany...at least to me.

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

The lighter the mahagany, the better, I'd assume. I think I'd probably put a C-5/PG in that guitar, if it were mine.

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

I agree that this configuration has a lot of potential, whether with a maple top or not.

I think any of the PAF style HBs would be fine, but the fact is, you know more about that than most of us. :)

BTW, I assumed SWD's tele was ash, since he's a traditionalist, but the grain on that is very straight for ash. I'd never even considered that it might be mahogany, but that's a good guess.

here's a suggestion: drop maple top, with contours, '54 profile neck, '59 or Seth neck pickup; strat style switch with either V/V/T or V/T controls

you might talk to Tommy at USA CG - I believe he's done a few custom projects with the Rev G ;)

also, check their gallery for ideas

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

Without a maple top, and with the right piece of mahogany, your tele could be a very light guitar. Think of Les Paul specials, almost every one I've ever come across has been very light. The lighter it is, the fatter sounding it'll be.

One of the best guitars I've ever played was a fender CS tele jnr. mahogany body and neck , and two p90s. Killer.

The c5 bridge is definitely a possibility. I liked mine in my ash tele. For the neck I am pretty sure that I want the glass of the phat cat. Thanks for the suggestions bro :)

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

Thanks Stevo,

I highly recommend the hollow body if you are going Warmoth. For the record, i also had an A2 Pro in the neck, which was incredibly smooth and "flutey" sounding, if that makes any sense. The Phat Cat mixes nicely with the bridge HB in the middle position-great for rhythm playing-sounds like a fatter stratocaster.

By all accounts, this should be a "bright" guitar-SS Frets, Ebony, Maple, JB-but it's actually just the opposite, due to the hollow mahogany body.

Good luck with your project!

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

Hey Steve, I'm going to pop a JB into the bridge of my FMT Tele in the next couple of days and post my findings. The FMT has a very thin 1/8" maple top with the rest of the body being mahogany. It is light and VERY resonant. Brighter sounding than any of the LP's that I have played lately. It's so comfortable to play, I think that you will really like something in this configuration.

I like the sound of that :) I have a custom shop bg-1400 and a strat hot stack neck in my swamp ash tele and it's a gem. The phat cat has a pretty cool p90 tone so I might be close to the one you are describing, for the neck tone. I really liked the JB in my last telegib, before I parted it out.. now I think it would fit in with some of the music stuff that I am getting in to.

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

I have a MIJ 69 RI Thinline that's mahogany. At the moment it has a Pearly Gates at the neck and a STL-2 tapped at the bridge. It sounds great in all positions for pretty much any style of music.

I am thinking of going with a Lil 59 in the bridge though. I think it will get along better with the Pearly than the Hot Lead.

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

fender is making mahogany teles

called the custom tele i believe

jsut take out the dimarzios, they only run like $500

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

I have a mahogony bodiied tele-sonic. It has gretch style pups in it, 2k something or other. The guitar has great tone! Good luck on the project!

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

I think mahogony body is a good idea, it's sorta combining some traits of tele's and Les Pauls, sounds good man, do it.

Re: Anyone have a Mohogany Tele?

may i suggest having it hollowed? you will like the extra girth and complex mids. sounds really huge!
