Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

Can't stop hearing good things about this pedal. Clips I've heard are actually quite good by comparison (I know they aren't always very reliable).

I was just wondering if anyone had any first-hand experience with 'em.

Re: Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

i heard the clips on the web site and you know what, they do sound really good. For osme reason it sounds alot like that classic brit rock sound whihc i love. somethig tells me it was proably played through a clean amp though.

Re: Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

I`ve played one through my rig and liked it. It was a hair trebly but that can be EQed . Sounds similar to a modded Boss SD-1.

Re: Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

I have used one for a few months and overall, it's a good pedal. The bass is nice and thick, no loss like on the sd1. The output level is very strong and the pedal is pretty loud (especially with the drive at higher settings). The tone control lets you dial it in from mellow and smooth to biting and stingy sounding.

The downside is this: The pedal can be VERY noisy. I tested several TS9 and TS5 pedals along with the ZW all set to similar settings. The TSs levels were set to somewhat match the ZW's settings. With the guitar volume down, I turned on each pedal and the ZW was obviously a LOT louder with white noise.

Obviously this pedal is meant to be used like the sd1, to slam the front end of a tube amp like Zakk does. Well, I've only got high gainers and nothing like a JCM 800, so that aspect doesn't work too well for me. What I've been doing is using it like another tube screamer. That kinda gives me a thicker, fatter, smoother TS sound with more gain.

Re: Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

Thanks MJ, I'm planning on getting one for that reason, setting the gain to 0, drive to 10, and using it to fatten the sound up and give more dynamics, and also to give the clean tone a bit of grit. Sounds like I made the right choice.

BTW, How'd you like that 59n? It get there alright?

Re: Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

Yeah, it works well (in my case anyway) with my other tubescreamers and I'm still trying to find the "right" combination of settings/uses for each one, but it's pretty good. Using at least 2 tube screamers, I can have one for rhythm and one for more gain/leads. I use the ZW for solos and smooth single note runs.

Yep, the 59n arrived fine and is installed in my Agile Explorer right now...sounds very nice, just what I was looking for with this guitar :)

Re: Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

I have one that I'm trying out versus's the TS-9. I tried the TS-808, and SD-1, and I liked the TS-9 best. Figured I'd try the Wylde. Spent about an hour with it and it is nice. I use it like lots of you do, to slam the front of an already distorted amp. (level maxed, tone about 10 o'clock, gain very low if any) I liked the harmonics and the bass on it. The tubescreamer did seem to have more bite and added a bit more crunch to my sound. I definately like the Wylde better than the SD-1 or TS-808, but I'm not sure if I like it better than the TS-9 yet.

Re: Anyone have a Wylde overdrive?

I think the Wylde OD is great when used as the second in a pair of ODs.

I use a TS-9 as a lead boost, as it's compression and midrange hump help even out your attack and add cut repectively.

I use a Wylde OD as a rhythm boost, as it's flat EQ (no mid hump, no bass loss) and lack of compression are both great for playing tight rhythm with no loss of dynamics. The Wylde OD has much more gain than a stock TS-9, and is very transparent, allowing your amps natural tone to shine through.

When used together, they do the screaming, sustain for days thing that guys like Santana and SRV both used.

How much bass and crunch will the Wylde OD add on a solid state amp though?

I loaned my pedalboard out to a friend for the weekend....

....if no one answers this by Monday, remind me and I'll test it out on my Peavey.
