Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

Help!I'maRock!

New member
Last month I bought a 1980 Ibanez Artist with original Super 70 pickups to backup my PRS Custom 24 with Dimarzio Virtual PAFs. I'd like to match the output between both guitars, and the Ibanez is a monster. Raising the VPAFs in the PRS doesn't do enough.

I do have an Air Norton/AT-1 set in a beater Ibanez that I can put into the PRS. I feel like the output will better match the Super 70s, but I'm not sure the tonal profile will match up. I'm also open to buying a set of Super 70s (if I can find them).

Thoughts on how to match up these two incredible instruments?

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

The Ibanez Artist will always be a monster because it has a stud-mount bridge and tailpiece combination into solid mahogany and maple exactly where the PRS Custom has a cavity for the vibrato bridge and tension springs.

In my opinion, the two guitars are never going to be directly interchangeable.

Volume knob?

It's true, but the tone can be compensated for somewhat. At the very least, getting the outputs between both guitars to match will go a long way.

I'm a volume knob rider. Output on the PRS at 10 matches the Ibanez at around 5. I just want them to respond similarly.

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

It would probably be easiest to just put a treble bleed mod on the volume knob of the Ibanez and set the volume to 5.

The problem isn't setting the volume on the Ibanez to 5. It's more operating on half of the dial instead of the entire range of the pot.

Was just offering an alternate solution to the problem given the thoughts put forth that these two instruments might be very difficult to balance.

its the a8 magnet in the super70 that gives it the crazy output. the wind is in the 8k range i think

^^
That was going to be my next suggestion.

Boost for the PRS?

I thought about that. If you have a suggestion on how to cram another pedal onto this board, I'm all ears. LOL

You could try A8 magnets in the Dimarzio's.

Call me Murphy. Or maybe Fackler (if you get it). If something can go wrong, I'll probably do it wrong. I'd like to preserve the Dimarzios in their stock state. I thought of the Air Norton/AT-1 set because I already have it. But I could probably get a used '59 set and experiment with some magnets.

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

I heard a rumor that in some Suoer70's, there were actually A4 magnets. That's what gave the ones we love that magical tone…

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

All of my guitars have various outputs. I use a volume pedal at the end of my chain to equalize everything.

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

I think you can squeeze a Pickup Booster on there under the Eventide. It is exactly what it was designed to do.

Ah, tuners-shmuners. Who needs 'em? Tuning is overrated. Find your own ...tune.

Actually, if you had a headstock tuner...

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

To be honest those Artists will probably still not be "matched" by a traditional PRS no matter what pickups you put in. Especially if the PRS has a trem with sustain block and the Artist has the non-trem brass block anchored in the wood.

Having said that, the Super70 should have an Alnico 8 magnet. Alnico 8 is the only Alnico variant that is actually louder.

As the other posters I don't understand why you would feel you have to match your different guitars volume wise. Sound-wise that isn't going to happen but APH1s or similar in the artist might make it a lot more to your liking.
