Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

Guys, I get this feeling that you think HIAR is a n00b. He might be new to the SDUGF but he's certainly been around the block.

To answer uOpt's direct question about matching volume, it seems to me to be more of a question of how much the guitar is hitting the OD/distortion/fuzz rather than actual volume.

I don't think the PRS is the wimpy beast you guys might think, while still not being as beastly as the Ibanez.

I think that the Pickup Booster might work. Or maybe a Spark Mini to squeeze into the board. Or, if he doesn't want to tapdance whilst switching guitars live, Howie could get himself a Custom 8 from somebody or an Alternative 8. The bigger winds with the A8 should help. There's probably a couple DiMarzios that would also have the same sort of raw output but I can't think of them off the top of my head right now.

tc spark mini, I have one, it works like a charm and it's small

I heard a rumor that in some Suoer70's, there were actually A4 magnets. That's what gave the ones we love that magical tone…

A new user that doesn't know the story behind could be confused, why trolling this way?

I have one, too. Heck, I've got three boosts on my board. LOL That's the one I use just to make what's coming out of the board louder. I've got a Mosky XP Booster (an Xotic EP-Booster clone) before my TC Flashback X4 and a GuitarPCB Stage 3 before everything 'cept the tuner and wah.

In HIAR's case, if that were the solution, I'd put it first and set it at about 9 o'clock to even things out.

Don't worry. I've got HIAR's back. Strangely, we've known each other online for... I guess "several" would be the right modifier for years. We date back to HCEG. However, we've not actually been able to meet up. Mostly my fault. He plays live in NYC a bunch and I live about 10 minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel. However, I suck at getting out of the house for fun stuff.

Re: Anyone have experience with Ibanez Super 70s?

Last month I bought a 1980 Ibanez Artist with original Super 70 pickups
Do not change a thing! Those old Artists are spectacular guitars.
Adjust your amp or pedals. It takes 2 seconds.
Embrace the diversity between both axes and enjoy the tonal palettes they both offer.
Life would be pretty boring if everything (especially musical instruments) were homogenized.Still, if you have to swap pickups, then adding some grunt to the PRS can't hurt. A lot of them came stock with PRS "dragon" pickups (i think they were called dragon) which are pretty hot i think around 15k. Maybe adding something like a whole lotta set will give that axe some girth and weight to match the old super 70s, but still retain the individual character of the axe.

LOL.

I agree that a boost would work. My boost of choice is the Z-Vex SHO. But as Tom mentioned, adding another stomp is not really something I want to do. Mostly I'll forget to turn it on/off as appropriate, live. That said, it's worth exploring before I go changing what's worked in the PRS for the past 10 years. So that's an option.

The biggest difference can be heard between bridge pickups. Clean, there's a slight bump in volume with the Ibanez. The difference is most noticeable with dirt. After a nice day outside, I've gotten to spend some time early this evening playing at slightly above NYC apartment level. At home, unity on the Ibanez on 7 is the PRS on 10. At rehearsal and live volumes, unity is around 5 or 6. It's for this reason I brought up the AN/AT1 idea in the OP. I've experienced the same thing with those pickups in a beater in comparison with the PRS. So if I put those in the PRS, they may not be dead on with the Ibanez, but they will be closer.

It's probably easiest to leave the Ibanez between 5-7 and call it a day. But what fun would that be? :D

Yeah, clean boost for the PRS. That's how I balance out my G&L Legacys with my Les Pauls/335s. That, and choosing the right guitar for the song.
