Anyone here know a good forum for serious ANALOGUE SYNTH discussion?

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
I am planning my next synth purchase and am not sure what I want to get for my next unit. I have a short list and have begun rooting through various reviews/videos, but would like to discuss it with people knowledgeable with analogue synths. Does anyone here have a recommendation for a good, knowledgeable, analogue synth community?

Thanks in advance!

Gearslutz is pretty fit.

There is a smattering of knowledgable people here. What general sort of instrument did you have in mind?

KVR audio forum. Been a member since 2004. Great place to talk analog. I think Muff Wiggler has a forum too for pure analog

How familiar are you with making sounds? Can you put up any examples of what sounds you want?

Do you want pure analog or will you consider virtual analog?

Thanks, I shall check it out.

The ultimate battle is between Moog type of sounds and Oberheim.

I have soft synths for both Moog and Oberheim. I am looking for a hardware, analogue synth in the $1-2k range.

Re: Anyone here know a good forum for serious ANALOGUE SYNTH discussion?

Good choices for both. Have you considered Moog Sub Phatty + Korg MS20 mini?

Or even the Elektron Analog 4 + ? (Could get elektron analog drums or extra sequencer even)

I am trying to avoid anything with a keyboard because I do not have a dedicated music room which means that all of my gear has to be stowed away when not in use. It's easier for me to have a single keyboard and use MIDI cables to connect my synths.

Which SR-JV-80- expansion boards do you have in your Roland JV-1080? The Vintage Synth board sounds better - and features a whole bunch of additional presets - when it is installed in the JD-990 module.

Having said this, a single note from my Creamware ASB Minimax or Prodyssey steamrollers its way through a whole backing track of ROMpler polyphony.

Have you considered the recent Dave Smith stuff?

Have you tried the Waldorf Nave plug-in?

For the money that you are thinking to spend, you could get Spectrasonics Omnisphere II, Trillian and Stylus RMX.

Thanks for the input. In my 1080 I only have the orchestral expansions. Even though I am now using EastWest for most of my orchestral needs, I love layering in ROMplers and for live use, the 1080 is just perfect! I have heard great things about the 1080 vintage synth expansion card but have not yet been able to nab one!!

I bring my MOPHO out on gigs; this purchase will most likely be studio-use only.

Omnisphere is AMAZING but really not what I am looking for. I am also not a fan of the ARP Odyssey, which I have in soft synth version as well as Moog and Oberheim. I am looking for an actual anologue box.

Since I already have the MOPHO, I would like something else to add to it instead of another DSI instrument.

I have the vintage synth rom for my 1080. It doesn't get used much only because I usially keep the session rom in and use my Blue Lantern Modular or Arturia MiniBrute for true analog sounds. It is a good rom though. I have a few virtual analogs too that I really like. Venom, Blofeld, SH-32 handle the virtual analog. The Blue Lantern has three filter modules in it. Moog ladder type, polivoks type, and oberheim type. Three oscillator modules, couple amp modules, lfo modules, and adsr's too. It's a fixed size modular. Blue Lantern's one off larger sized Salamander Synth.

That portable 11 looks great but ropes you into 1/4" patch cables vs 3.5mm. That said, it has good expansion options and price is very good. Buchla gear also uses the 1/4" style.

Have you seen any of the Pittsburgh Modular stuff?

The Foundation 3.1 is cool and you can build on it or patch together with other gear like Oberheim SEM

What modules are in your Blue Lantern? They make a lot of stuff!
Do you have a photo of your modular case?

Re: Anyone here know a good forum for serious ANALOGUE SYNTH discussion?

It's one of his early synths. He made some smaller synths called Salamanders and then did a one off larger form, single aluminum case with fixed modules. It is not expandable other thanby getting second system setup and patching between those. I can patch between my Arturia MiniBrute and the Salamander though. Built in modules are:

CV multiple buffer x2
Attenuator x4
Oscillator x3 (saw, reverse saw, sine, triangle, square, pulse w/pulse width modulation and ring modulation)
Oscillator mixer x1
Convert 3.5mm to 1/4" x1
VCA x2
LFO x2 (saw, square)
Noise x1 (white, pink)
Clock x1
T+ADSR x2 (T is Time control)
LM4250 filter x1
Diode Ladder x1
OB12VCF x1
Midi to CV x1

Pics are on my iphone and forum software has limitations no direct upload of photos. I use my iphone to snap pictures of various patches. No patch memory on MiniBrute or Salamander, so iphone pics work great for storing patches.

The printed specifications state single VCO. This will be fine for bleeps, bloops, transient percussive noise hits and Patrick Moraz bubbles. Fat lead and bass sounds usually require a minimum of two VCOs.

Ah, that thing.

It was reviewed in Sound On Sound magazine earlier this year. Originally intended for educational purposes until somebody eventually pointed out the obvious commercial potential. Now, the unit is being marketed. I seem to recall that it comes as a kit for user assembly. It also has some minor potential for customisation before the casing is closed up.
