Anyone here use single coils for metal?

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

Sho' do.

Everytime I switch to my DiMarzio Area '67 in the middle of my Ibby with some distortion, I'm instantly in power metal mode. Sounds so damn good I tell ya what.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

Paul Gilbert does. I keep forgetting about him. When TLD said Dimarzio I remembered.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

It is hard to pull it off with true single coils and stacked single coils. Most that try are lead players in the progressive metal genre who have keyboards or rhythm guitarists to fill in the mix. The only true single coil that I have tried that can do a decent job is the SSL5.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

So Single sized humbuckers dont count? haha

I think it depends. A hot rails or something similar is obviously made to be a straight-on humbucker in a single coil size. Now if we are talking about Dimarzio Areas, those are a lot more single coil like (just they wanted to eliminate the hum). Not a "true" single coil, but I think they count.

What your talking about is the difference between a noiseless single coil and a single coil sized humbucker.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

Single coils are only 'not the best tool for the job' if your knowledge of metal stops at what the 80s and 90s had to offer (the thrash, death and groove metal bands).
Heavy guitar based music has diversified a lot since then, and there are plenty of sub-genres/styles where single coils would work perfectly.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

As much as I love the leads from a strat neck single I just couldn't deal with the noise when I was working with singles, I didn't bother with noiseless singles and went straight to mini hums for replacements in my first guitar, 3 lil 59s.......

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

sound demos or it doesn't exist single coils for metal. :gurmpy:

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

Try a STK-S9b (Hot Stack Plus) and tell me you can't play metal with it. It's fully capable. Yes, it is noiseless, but even split (turning off the noise-cancelling coil) there's not that much noise (crazy enough). Gimme my SSS Strat with a Soldano SLO-100 and I'll pull off some metal riffs no problem.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

To those that think single coils are somehow "inferior" metal pickups....

Telecaster ;)

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

Yngwie has produced very heavy crunch at times with singles, although he usually goes for medium levels.

I love singles because there is nowhere to hide. They will either expose your skill or lack thereof. In comparison, a maxed out modeling amp with HBs is like a shield for novices, most players sound basically the same.

I don't this is in any way true.... Like Little Pigbacon mentioned everyone plays differently and that has a big factor in the sound aswell, I have heard a les paul live sound like a telecaster.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

So much bull****. Just because it doesn't sound like Metallica or Megadeth doesn't mean you can't play metal with it. One of my ALL-TIME favorite metal sounds was a SG Jr P90 into a VH140C. Play a tele QP and tell me you can't play metal with it. Listen to Engineer, Unsane, and KEN mode... more metal than whatever you're listening to.

I can believe that... I have not played an Ampeg amp I have not liked.. some for tube new and vintage Traynors

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

The buzz is wicked, just use it as part of your sound, like Hendrix did.

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

i have played a ssl-5 for heavy dirty rockin stuff

sounded awesome

very articulate.

not exactly a tight sound, but definitely metal

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

I've recorded my Modulus with Nordstrand singlecoils and it did really well for heavy, modern metal. The tone is totally different than a humbucker or P90, but that's the point. Typically, I use the P-Rails for metal though. Just different flavors.

Noiseless single coils are usually humbuckers. The Dimarzio Area series I was specifically referring to in that post have 4-conductor hookup wire. Same with the GFS Neovins. Both are meant to be voiced as single coils. The Fender Noiseless sets IIRC also have the infamous "dummy coil" integrated into the pickup, so still technically a humbucker just you hear the main coil minus the hum - just some people find the dummy coil to ruin the whole single coil vibe.

To those that think single coils are somehow "inferior" metal pickups....

Telecaster ;)

I liked for the Wintersun, and then the telecaster. ;)

Re: Anyone here use single coils for metal?

I have a coil split wired to one of my warlocks and a spin-a-split wired Dimebucker in a Washburn. Yes, there are tones to be had from coil splitting, but for full bore aggression, humbucker mode is necessary.
