Hi Guys

Anyone here uses or tried Metal Guitar Picks..... Brass, Steel, Copper etc.


Do these Picks flex in lower Gauges ?


Do you like them ?

The copper picks I used back in the 80s had some flex. They also scratched the heck out of the top of my guitar. They were great for pick rakes, though.

I used to use stainless steel picks. It was a .060 and had zero flex. Once the edges got smooth, the pick was awesome.

I lost it, sadly, and switched to tortex.

It was really hard on strings. Made the wound strings look like flat-wounds, in just a few weeks.

i tried them and i wasn't impressed, yes, great tone, but they shred a bit and if you have a couloured one it colours the strings which is a pain to get out and it stains your hands, stick to plastic and tortex, can't fault them.

I sometimes use a pick I made out of a 1906 silver dollar. No flex, but it does have a sound all of it's own. They are quite easy to make if you have a Dremel tool, file and 0000 steel wool. The trick is beveling the edges.

Billy Gibbons uses an old silver Mexican Peso for a pick.

How easy is it to hold on to tone of those? I find myself sweating quite a bit up on stage and have trouble holding onto a tortex pick sometimes, especially the thicker ones with less flex. The stiffer the pick, the more it wants to force itself out of my hand when I'm strumming.

I used the "Hotlicks" copper picks for a long time, gauge 9 (.009" I believe). I had all the gauges, they started at 5, through 10. They all flexed to a degree. Lately I've used off and on the "Cymbolic" brass and some old "Stiletto" brass and aluminum pics and these don't flex at all because they are very thick. These thicker ones I've had to file and sand to get the tip to my liking, for in the case of the "Cymbolic" there was no bevel to the edge and I need that.

If you can find unfinished brass picks, if you sweat they are good to grip because something about the metal and the sweat go together. I state unfinished because the "Cymbolic" brass has some finish on it and doesn't interact with the sweat but my "Stiletto" is raw brass and I can really grip that one (I sweat a lot).
