Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

Anyone got the scoop on these?? They're humbuckers but I'm not sure what kind of tone they produce compared to some of the other Dimarzios.

Re: Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

I have a Steve Morse black and creme zebra bridge humbucker. What I can tell you about this pickup is it is hot and tight sounding and splits really well. It's got a lot of mids, a decent amount of highs and the lows are no where near as pronounced as those in say a Tone Zone. It works great in the Steve Morse model guitar or in an ax pushing a Mesa Rectofier as it doesn't get muddy and is very punchy through an amp with a lot of lows like the Mesa. Right now, I have it in the neck of my PRS CU24 with an Air Zone in the bridge and the combo balances pretty well with the Morse quite a bit farther from the strings than the Air Zone. I am thinking about getting an A2 or A3 magnet for the Morse to lighten up on the output a bit. But so far, I can't complain.

Thanks for the info.....does it have an A5 in there I guess??

Sounds similar to a megadrive if that's the case.....interesting.

I've never used the bridge myself (being a Morse fan you'd think I would have bought a set by now), but I don't see how the megadrive with it's mid scoop would sound like the Morse bridge which is very midrangey (nice spike), and a bit rounder top ( I've heard someone else play one, but never got the chance to take a close listen; or mess with it myself).
The Morse neck pup is dark which is unusual for a neck pup design, lower output (so it's kinda clean under overdrive, well compared to it's bridge I guess ... it doesn't mud up though), mids very well balanced, bass just natural sounding, not really a boosted or cut sound to it. Fairly open sounding, but still solid, lays a bit more on the focused side of things.
I played that one in alder body strat, rosewood fingerboard, hard tail thru a marshall dual reverb, and an old Fender M-80. Sounded really nice ... I wouldn't count on it in the bite department if you need to cut thru and your guitar is overly warm; or your amp is muddy.

Well to be honest....I've never tried a Megadrive either but I was told or assumed that it was fairly well balanced in the EQ department....but if it's scooped alot then yes you'd be right.

Re: Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

i special ordered a steve morse bridge model a long time ago with very high hopes!!
boy was i disappointed, im not going to say its the worst pup ive owned, that honor goes to the ibanez powersound humbuckers, but it wasnt all that good. it is a very focused pup with a tight bottom that isnt that big and what i found to be an overly bright tone. kinda like hitting your amp with a mailed fist. for high gain shreding it sounded ok into a mesa but for anything else into anything else, i couldnt get along with it. and boy did i try, i paid $75+tax when i was like 16 for that thing and i couldnt get it to sound good in anything. i got it cause it was supposed to be really high output and had a thick sound. it was really high output, but not the thick sound i was looking for. i got it rewound at the duncan custom shop to a sh5 wind, 17k with an alnico V magnet. sounds great now, the allen head poles keep things tight even though it has a huge bottom

Steve's one of those virtuosos who gets an amazing tone live...but his gear wouldn't work for me if my life depended on it!

He has a wicked left hand vibrato (Yngwie doesn't like it...) and a right hand that can pick anything he wants so fast and clean it gets a little numbing after a while.

What a musician...and a jet pilot too!

yeah whats with yngwie not liking it. i heard alot about that

Re: Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

I owned one at one time. They're a pretty decent sounding pup, but like a lot of Dimarzios, kinda noisy. Still with the HUGE output, it's not really all that noticeable. I think they sound similar to a SD Full Shred, maybe a tad more bottom end, though. I'm sure there will be people that would disagree with that, but that's what I think.

Re: Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

I used the bridge for a while. At first I was disappointed as it sounded too bland for my taste (at least it did in my guitar). I came to realize that it is a very versatile pickup that lets you get pretty much anything you want from it by utilizing your volume and tone controls, amp, effects, etc. without imposing a set sound on you. It cleans up easily and can get sweet or nasty distorted depending on what you use it with. The mids are definetely emphasized but the lows and highs do not get in your way- giving you room to play with your tone.

Why didn't I keep it? Because I wanted a specific sound. After three other pickups, I am still searching!

Dimarzios aren't noisy...I've owned at least 6 of them...

It's got a mid scoop, but it's not as intense as some others (steve special).

Well Yngwie is Yngwie ans Steve is Steve ... I love 'em both, but as far as I'm concerned on the subject of Yngwie not liking Steve's vibrato ... I won't lose sleep over it, steve by far is the more versatile player of the two, and has a lot more to offer texture and tonewise ... Yngwie could learn a lot from him ... Plus I dig Steve's vibrato ...I can't do it to save my life, but love it the same. Then again, I wonder if Steve could do my vibrato ... Better question would be, would he even want too ... :laugh2:
Yeah, the pilot thing was a trip, good for him! :) :cool3:

Re: Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

the morse pup is real bad! i am a dimarzio user and it was very dissapointing!
i like the dimeola set,the derringer set but the morse set! forget it!
for him it works wonders and that is all that really matters!
my favorite dimarzio is the PAF pro,i still cant believe how clear it is for a pup that has a 300mv rating????
I think it is the best modern PAF around!

Re: Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

RG 2570, have you compared the PAF Pro to the Virtual PAF?

I have a VPAF and love it, just wanted to know how it compares. Thanks :)

the Virtual pafs are more vintage sounding and the pros are more modern, they have more output, presence, and less bass
:)

Well, I'm not sure which ones you've owned but I've had at least a half dozen in various guitars that i've owned (mainly the Super Distortions or something similar) and in every case that I've transplanted Duncans (mostly Invaders or Full Shreds or JB's) the noise has been reduced. So....yea, they are.....

Re: Anyone know about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups?

By the way, mind you, I'm not saying they're bad sounding pickups (they're not), I've just found their signal to be a little more prone to EM interference.
