Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I always found it to be a gutless pickup in the bridge. Some people like it in the neck.

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

^ slander!

the demon is excellent.

OP - that's a bit vague. are you a lynch fanboy or are you looking for a specific sound?

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I don't think he's necessarily using just ONE model pickup. He's got A2Pros, Pearly Gates, Super Vs, and Screaming Demons. There's a video somewhere of him digging on a A5 Staple too. He also plays a vintage Esquire. Diversity is a good thing.

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I currently have it in my DK2..altho its good for rytm, its to thin for my taste for soloing. Also the G, B, A strings sound to twangy...Im putting back my JB in and ordered a PATB-2.
Its more of a neck pickup...

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I love mine.

You gotta let the amp do the heavy lifting though.
This will be a bit of a problem if you're used to hot pickups which dictate the EQ response more strictly than this pickup does.
If you can deal with that, it's fantastic. Finding the right pickup height is critical.
Very precise, clean and doesn't sound fat pushed like a JB, it's more of a wide sound. And it's not sterile or cold at all, though that will depend a lot on what guitar it's going into since it's low output.

However... I'd never ever ever EVER put it in a Strat though.
It's gotta have a big plank of mahogany/koa/anything fat and warm sounding behind. At least it will be easier that way.
I can't see myself putting it in a Ash or Maple body guitar. And I know Lynch's signature ESP is made of maple. Still I wouldn't do it.
I'd love to try it in a Les Paul.

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I have one in a PRS SE bridge and liked it's '59ish tone, but found the treble a bit "hard" sounding. As suggested on the forum, I put all the fillisters under the plain strings and the hex heads under the wound strings. This made the plains strings sweeter and more bell like (p-90ish) and the wound strings sound more like the plain strings with more focus and crunch. May need to add thickness with your amp if that is what you like. ;)

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

One of my favorite hybrids is to take one Screamin' Demon coil and one '59 coil. The Demon tends to soften the bass of the 59. Its a Screamin' 59.

Or . . . would that be 29.5 Demon?

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

Forgot something. The Demon makes a lot more sense when you gig or rehearse with a band.
Because it gives a clear, present tone without being shrill or annoying.
It's hard not to make it sit right with the other instruments, since the bass is so focused and tight.

I loved the Demon out of the box, and at the rehearsal room it got a lot better. Even my bandmates noticed the difference.

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

Wonder what it sounds like with an Alnico 8 or Ceramic mag

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I know of a number of people who have the Screamin' Demon with A8, even talk with one regularly. I've never really gotten a description of the differences that was any more specific than the difference between A5 and A8 in general.

For people who found it too thin or low output, it certainly beefs it up.

Only people I've heard who actually tried it with ceramic found it too bright (at least for their guitar).

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

Bridge Lil demon ( singel Coil) is great for those wanting both Guts and Glamour( Gibson/Strat) from their bridge, as the bridge can sound very hot-PAf'ish, yet clean up real Stratty with the volume rolled down.
I do prefer the JBjr bridge in the neck as opposed to the Lil Screamin Demon neck in the neck position though ,when paired with a hot bridge bucker, although thats not its intrended application. It balances real well in volume, and has a killer middle position sound with a hot bridge full sized 'bucker.
Sorry. I know you wrer talking about the full sizd Demon, but I love to be evangelical about the Lil Demon, its such an awesome Strat pickup@!

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I think with a ceramic you'd have to install it in an actual mahogany tree so it doesn't sound bright.
A8 makes a lot more sense, I remember to have read good stuff about it.

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

I've got one that I've never installed. I need to throw it in one of my Les Pauls and check it out.

Re: Anyone still like the Screamin' Demon?

That's what I always thought. I figured they would be sort of similar in a sense.
The treble on the demon can be a bit sharp and it doesn't have as much bass as a jazz.
