Anyone tried a 59 with Ceramic magnet?

I'm just curious, since I've been messing with magnets lately. I'm wondering if a 59B with ceramic would be like a Custom lite?

Anyone know?

Re: Anyone tried a 59 with Ceramic magnet?

I wonder if the ceramic magnet would make it brighter than it already is probably not a good thing with that pup!

Re: Anyone tried a 59 with Ceramic magnet?

I tried a Demon with a ceramic and it was uggly , with a fizzy top .
You could try an alnico 8 instead ?

Re: Anyone tried a 59 with Ceramic magnet?

The Jackson J-50BC humbucker is very close to a ceramic ´59... I haven´t used one in quite some time, so I can´t make definite statements. At least not past: I liked it.

That was my thought. A6 might be interesting too. I'd bet that the '59 with a8 would be similar to the Ibanez Super 70.

I wondered about that. My 1980 Artist came with a J50B in the bridge, and it sounded like a punchy, powerful '59. Of course, I haven't had a '59 bridge in years so my memory of that one may be off...

Alnico 8 would definitely be better than ceramic in a 59. As would Alnico 6...

Actually, the 50B and the ´59 sound very similar to my ears, very similar wind and both use an alnico 5 mag. The C in BC stands for ceramic ;)

Thanks for all the input guys. I'll probably just sell that pickup instead of tamper with it.

Zang, I have an A3 magnet lying around. Do you think A3 is good for a Custom bridge, or would I be better off saving that magnet for a neck pickup? I've heard a lot of good things about A3 and A4 in neck pickups. Your thoughts?

Do you mean for the Custom humbucker series, as in, Custom (ceramic), Custom Custom (A2), and Custom 5 (A5)?

If yes, then A3 is very cool in a Custom -- I have a "C3" in my ES-355. Adds a little sparkle and chime that the A2 lacks.

A3 and A4 do make good neck pu magnets. Use A3 if the pu is a little dull, A4 if it's a little too bright.

Re: Anyone tried a 59 with Ceramic magnet?

I have a Gibson Flying V with a '59N and Custom Bridge.
The Neck sounded Muddy, no definition on 5th and 6th strings. The bridge was too bright and Buzzy.
I exchanged the Magnets. The Neck is much improved. Good definition. Not a real PAF sound but much usable than the Muddy '59. The bridge is now a Custom 5 and sounds GREAT.
I have to go back and inspect the Bridge PUP because 1) it is out of phase with the Neck and 2) the bridge PUP sometimes "pops" when I mute leads.

Re: Anyone tried a 59 with Ceramic magnet?

Hi aroman, it probably pops when you mute because you press the strings onto the polepieces.
The out of phase happened probably because you flipped one of the magnets unintentendly when you changed the magnets. If you flip one of them back, you're done. Try to get an A4 for your neck pickup you, will like it.

I tried a Jazz with Ceramic. Just sounded wired and not even close to my 496R.

I'll have to make a mental note to try that myself Jazz with a ceramic.

I remember there were people on here saying how horrible the JB would sound if one wanted to swap in the ceramic into it if they swapped the Alnico 5 into the Custom to make the fabled Custom 5. I tried it and the JB ceramic was hands down better than the Custom 5. I remember people saying the pickup was not only bad but totally unuseable.

I guess perception is different with different people, but I will try it and if it does sound like a 496r, it should be a winner, as that is probably one of my more favorite neck pickup tones for aggressive music.

I'm pretty sure the JB w/ceramic = Distortion. So, that's what you probably ended up with....a Duncan Distortion.

Actually it's similar to the DD but a little tamer since it is a smaller ceramic and there is no ceramic magnet spacer like on the DD. With that considered it was still like people were saying a DD was garbage. That is not only bizzare but downright ludicrous. Strange thing is they were calling this JB+ harsh. God forbid they tried an actual DD, they'd probably have a heart attack. haaha. These might be the same people that would call Elvis heavy metal... Clueless...
