Anyone tried a John Petrucci Sterling guitar?

I've tried one at GC and looks, plays and sounds nice - just wondering about other people's experiences.....

Re: Anyone tried a John Petrucci Sterling guitar?

ya i tried one... it was a purple finnished one... seemed to be the nicer guitar out of the 4 models of Sterling the local shop has in stock... the Axis's didn't do much for me...

the Sterlings are a long shot from "feeling" like a real higher quality USA Ernie Ball but for a $500 or less guitar they can be fine...

it's like the difference between Epi's and Gibsons and MIM and MIA Fenders...

end result i liked the JP Sterling model for what it was and not what it was not

Re: Anyone tried a John Petrucci Sterling guitar?

Honestly, I liked the OLP guitars better than the Sterling stuff. Maybe it's just the ones I've played.

If you liked it, then go and get it!

Re: Anyone tried a John Petrucci Sterling guitar?

picked it up today. brand new (but with a hairline crack - they're shipping me another brand new one) with a tone zone to put in the bridge for $370 out the door. The guitar was knocked down to $312 after tax for a reason my friend at GC did not know. Good guitar.

Just ordered one...should be here tomorrow...has a standard 3 way switch. They come in 3 tone sunburst and blackburst... Im so excited to play a guitar like this..

If you buy the Sterling JP (the lower model one), and simply put your own Dimarzio's in it (Crunch Lab/Liquifier), it's damn close to sounding like the real thing. You're missing out on the trem, the switching, of course the higher end wood/components/paint choices and frills and whatnot, but then you'll have a great guitar for ~$700

They've got one in a pawnshop around the corner,199 ticket price.Matte Black, locking tuners w/gigbag.Feels pretty good, but I haven't plugged it in.If I had the cash I'd certainly consider it,esp since they know me,ie good customer discount.

Dear lord, $199 is a steal. They go for $500 on eBay still, you'd be lucky to find a nicked one for $350. I've been waiting to grab one, I figured at least the JP50 would go down with the introduction of the JP100 (That BFR copy looks nice in the smokey black).

Nicely put!

What did you prefer about the OLPs? I haven't spent too much time with a Sterling JP since checking 'em out when they were introduced at NAMM but the ones I have tried have been at least as good as anything I ever played in that price range. IME, the OLP stuff was cheaper, but had good reason to be.

I had an OLP Axis... I didn't really like it. It was a great guitar, but oddly enough just not my style.

What shop Randy? :naughty:

Do they come in the same purple as the US ones?? I love that color.. Of course black would be cool with a set of purple pups

Re: Anyone tried a John Petrucci Sterling guitar?

I haven't played the Petrucci but the MM is one hell of a player. Great guitar for the money. If you can find one used, jump on it.

I suspect the Petrucci is on the same level.

The JP50 looks like a matte "Stealth Black" finish, as opposed to the glossy MM models. I don't like it. Even the "Stealth Black" on the higher ends aren't that matte. It's just weird to me.

There's a red-ish JP50 as well. I like it better than the black (it's no mystic dream to be sure);

Are we talking USD? Even with the black finish, I think it may be too good to pass up...
