Hey guys! Just wondering if anyone has tried the EMG S set, or the S set with the SPC. I am considering purchasing the Pro Series VG20 Vince Gill set for a rosewood fretboard strat and am wondering what i can expect. I know a lot of people use the SA pickups but i don't hear many talk about the S set. I'm guessing the S set + SPC will be tighter for heavier music than the SA + SPC due to the ceramic magnets?

i used to use a sv set with the spc control. the spc is nice to add some beef to the single coils for solos.
the s is tighter than the sa and is probably better for heavier music or country. if you are playing heavier stuff i might go with a bucker in the bridge. what guitar is this for?

The guitar is a Fender mexican standard strat with a rosewood fretboard. I'm wanting to keep the original strat sounds intact, and use the SPC as an add-on for versatility. On the EMG site, they say the SPC was designed to get beefier humbucker-like sounds from a singlecoil, and i am wondering how effective it is at this.

For many years my strat had the Dave Gilmour setup (DG20 with SAs) and I really liked it. The discription of SPC making SAs sound more like P90s is understandable but you really need to hear the system to make up your own mind.
At the time I was using the system I always felt the SPC was really "humbuckering" up my tone but now when I go back and listen to recordings it still sounds fairly strat-like to me. That's not a bad thing, it's just not at dramatic a difference as I felt at the time.
I've since taken the system out of the guitar and I have to admit that the tone I miss the most is the bridge pickup with the SPC engaged. It's definitely its own thing and sounds great for leads and slightly distorted to heavy rhythm.
