Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Sad the original post was about the new Yngwie/SD pickups and instead it is a thread about tearing down the man. I opened for him once and he was cool to us and one of the most professional headliners I have dealt with. I swear within 15 min of being off the stage they hit their first notes. People need to give it a rest with Yngwie.

Now that I got that off my chest has anyone tried the p/u yet? I would be curious as well.

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Uh, what?

All we said is that the bridge pickups doesn't behave, which wouldn't be surprising if the neck pickup didn't behave like expected.

Even I don't blame him for that.

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

We want Malmsteen's parody videos back on youtube!!!!

To the point. This thread got me started reconsidering the pickup layout of the guitar I want to build. I was thinking H-H but now I'm tempted by the YJM's middle and neck tone. His bridge tone is very cool too but I can't stand bridge SCs.

How's the neck model output-wise? Can it stand next to a pickup with the power of the Distortion or the Invader? Or maybe the bridge model placed in the neck and middle positions would work better for that?

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

It is funny this thread popped up because I was looking at the fury on SD yesterday and thought it sounded kind of arrogant that SD states "When Yngwie J. Malmsteen set out on a quest to bring his tone to a higher level, he turned to Seymour Duncan."

I think Dimarzio did a fabulous job creating the Hs2 and Hs3 and Yjm pickups. If you heard them before out of the neoclassical context or in a different guitar then you probably thought they were great pickups. I love SD pickups but I wouldnt call them superior to Dimarzio. Its just my observation. Im not calling SD out on it.
I would. Everything DiMarzio Does is High Output and use C8 or A5 magnets. DiMarzio is very bland if you ask me.

Sure they use ceramics and A5's a lot (don't forget A2's), but I think it's a testament to them that they can come up with so many unique voicings using the same mags.

Also, You are ignorant if you think EVERYTHING they produce is high output.

Point is, BOTH DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan rock. :cool2:

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Question:

Yngwie used the old DiMarzio HS-3's and YJM's with his tone pots disconected. So the old pickups were just connected to a 250k volume.

Were the new Duncan pickups designed with the above in mind?
Or are they so much brighter that Yngwie now has reconnected his tonepots?

Maybe Evan has some knowledge about this, as I'm sure Yngwie had to mention this in the planning stages of the new pickups.

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Well there's no tone knob on the bridge pickup anyway, unless you're combined with the middle. So the only pickup in question is the neck pickup, and from what I understand he disconnects the tone pots because he doesn't use them, and doesn't need them to be bumped live. All the guards we sent him had the tone pots disconnected, but the Fender strat, Dimarzio's old pickguard, and our new pickguard have the tone controls wired in. I would guess he has some strats that have tone pots hooked up, but not that I've seen personally. Still, I don't think it's polite to sell a pickguard with two pots unhooked! :) but anyone can snip those two wires and be done with it.

Cool!
Thanks for chiming in Frank.
Really appreciate it!

Don't forget that Malmsteen uses 008 gauge strings.

That changes more than disconnecting the tone pot given that he still have a volume pot.

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

I actually have a set of these in one of my Strats now. I like them, though I have to say I like the neck/middle pickup a lot more than the bridge pickup. I think it's great that the bridge pickup has a different personality than the neck, but I find it a little difficult to dial-in. I think I'll get there though. The neck pickup is a thing of beauty and can nail Yngwie's tones with ease. The bridge pickup has a raw side to it, which is probably what Yngwie wants.

Funny thing, I tried them out today and I really love the bridge pickup but couldnt find the sweet-spot on the neck pickup yet.
That being said, the bridge SD YJM is connected to a 250k tone pot and I think it's prefect this way. It is raw but not too bright. Just very articulate and has a really great rock tone to it.
The neck pickup is too warm (also connected to a 250k tone pot) by comparison, so maybe I just need to disconnect the tonepot from the neck pickup so that it is only connected to the 250k volume pot...

What do you think about the bridge model in the neck and middle positions? Will it be ok matching a strong humbucker in the bridge like say the Distortion or maybe the Invader?

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Well, I haven't tried the bridge YJM in the neck yet, but I really think you should be fine.
This are not low output pickups, as the DiMarzios were.
So, yeah, I think the bridge YJM in the neck will have no probs with a strong humbucker...

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Apologies in advance for resurrecting an old thread

Has anyone tried these with a non-scalloped fretboard? I'm thinking of using them in a Strat (Alder body and 1 piece Maple neck.)

Thanks!

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

Yes, they're awesome. I like them way better than the current Classic Stack Plus. They're closer to the original Classic Stacks, which sounded more authentic to my ears.

Good to hear! I have a Spare Roasted Maple Strat neck and already have Fat 50s in my main Strat so I wanted to go a different route. I really dig Yngwie Malmsteen's tone and figured since these were radiused to 9.5" they would be awesome to try on my Strat build.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone tried the YJM Fury pickup yet?

The Strat I tried them in wasn't scalloped. It was a vintage radius, though, with low, easy action. The balance of the strings was great. They were really quiet in front of a loud Friedman (there were no genuine Marshalls around).

That sounds awesome! I love my Fat 50s but they are pretty noisy when switching from my HH Strat. Sounds like I need to get this set!
