Anyone tried these tuners off ebay?

Just browsing for tuners as I might replace the ones on my old Charvel 375.

I searched for Schaller locking tuners and these came up.

What do people think of them? Anyone tried a pair (small chance but they sold a lot of units)?

$18.99 shipped is way cheaper than the $60+ for original Schaller one, but then i guess you get what you pay for as with most things?

Thoughts?

Well compared to he real thing they are rubbish. But if thats all you have then i guess get them. i would rather go second hand and quality then that.

It'll probably be an upgrade for the future, doing electronics this time round.

Was just wondering what peoples thoughts on cheaper tuners like this are.

I bought a cheap set of locking tuners similar to those from Guitar parts online

they work well with the exception of one thing

the stem that goes up the center of the tuner
up through the hole where the string passes through
and provides the locking function

its not connected to the wheel on the back

in order to get the string in
I had to reach in with a pointed thing and push it down

this is why I stopped buying those "inexpensive" tuners

I have since bought the Fender branded Schallers
the Fender branded Pings
Carvin branded "some unknown import"
and recently the Planet Waves auto trim

none of which do this

I like the Carvin and Fender Branded ones
I have yet to install the Planet Waves

Just because they're too heavy for you doesn't mean they're rubbish. If they keep tune and simplify the string changing process, they are doing their job.

Cheap tuners are something to stay away from as they are usually one of the bigger flaws on cheaper guitars. The real ones will hold tune better and have smoother gear action.

Tuners on a guitar with a locking nut aren't really important at all are they? You just need to be able to ballpark the tuning with them . . . pretty much any cheap thing should work fine. They're completely removed from the equation once you tighten the nut down.

i used these on an upgrade project.. Very happy with them. wasnt about to use some high dollar parts for the guitar is question...Even thinking about replacing some stock jackson tuners with them. These tuners just seem so much smoother and more exact when tuning compared to the jackson ones

Lockers tuners on a locking nut guitar is pretty redundant. But having a good quality smooth tuner still makes your life a lot easier, locking nut or not. I have upgraded the tuners on one of my floyded guitars.

I plan on changing the tuners on my floyded guitar
It just makes string changes so much easier

I bought cheap ones on EBay and I bought the imports from GuitarFetish. The GuitarFetish imports are great, I still have and use them. The others were crap. The good news is, the one's in your picture look to be the same type that I got from GuitarFetish. The difference is the finish on the locking knob part, and that does look like the better one. They couldn't be much of an upgrade from much of anything that's stock these days.

When it comes to buying cheap-o versions of things, the simpler the original thing, the fewer problems the knock off is bound to have. I might buy cheap-o regular tuners on a super cheap project that I was just gonna flip, but I probably would never buy cheap-o locking tuners. Overengineering + poor quality = bad news. If it's gonna be poor quality, then at least make it a simple design that's harder to screw up.

Not every guitar reacts to them but some do. I don't do heavy tuners anymore since I a/b tested them some time ago.

The Sperzels are the way to go for sealed locking tuners, IMHO, and the gotoh vintage style semi-locking ones for open one, IMHO.

Heavy bass bridges are also a real killer.

I have the GFS locking tuners on my Tele they are pretty good. This is coming from a guy that generally hates GFS.

Hmm. So, if you tune up, lock the nut, then unscrew the tuners and remove them from the guitar you'll sound better?

I didn't say better. But yes with many necks you can easily observe a sound change going heavy to light tuners. With other necks you don't. Every neck is different. Different wood stiffness, different wood thickness, different truss rod construction. The really stiff stuff probably doesn't notice the tuners.

Myself I usually think that the more floppy necks that really rests against the truss rod, say like a bow, sound best. But they suffer quite a bit of you put weight at the far end.
