Anyone try a JB with an Alnico 3 magnet?

Re: Anyone try a JB with an Alnico 3 magnet?

Yes, I have. It doesn't change it all that much. Still very hot. I even tried removing the keeper bar ("half-air" mod) as well as the A3, and it still didn't do much. The coils are just wound to hot too really do much with in the way of mag swaps and such; no matter what you do with magnets, it will still be a thick sounding pickup. If you want what you think that an A3 might give you from a JB, you'd be much better off running it either split or parallel instead of doing the mag swap. Better yet, just get a different pickup.

I use a A3 jbj in a historic les Paul.
Less boomy and stiff. No nasty spike. More organic ear friendly tone.
