Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

The how many pedals poll made me think to ask this..

Do any of you use more than one board? Let me explain what Im thinking/asking... I have a bunch of pedals. (too many and need to sell some) BUT.. I used to have a giant board with a ton of stuff on it. Was cumbersome and weighed a ton. And I wasnt using a bunch of them.. So, I built a smaller board that has basics. EQ/delay/OD/noisegate/wah. Im trying not to rely on color pedals until I get my playing better. HOWEVER, I do have a few "color" pedals that I want to keep, such as my MXR phase 90, Flanger, etc. So Im thinking of building a separate board for those.. I figure if the application warrants, I can chain the 2 boards together. Is this a dumb idea? Im just wondering what you guys do? Suggest?? Thanks!

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I'm currently between boards, but I typically put together a board with the pedals I actually use and leave the others on the shelf except when I need them for something. I'd also like to build a 2nd small board for acoustic gigs.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I have chained two SKB boards together, took up too much stage space. Even my one big board now (Pedalboard), when positioned centered to my mic stand, doesn't take up as much room, and it holds more pedals....

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

i keep a timmy in my "always bring cable bag" as a stand alone overdrive to always have with me. itll get me through just about anything in a pinch

i have a small board with two overdrives and a deja vu delay. two flavors of dirt that stack well and a delay that can also be set to just give the modulation and simulate a leslie or chorus type sound

the big board has a bunch of drive options, two delays, shape shifter trem, boss oc2, and rotosphere. i almost never use it since its bulky and heavy. sounds freakin awesome though

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I have a secondary board with pedals that I don't use on my main board. It keeps them organized and usable when someone else comes over to work on material. They can plug into an amp and board and only need to bring a guitar.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I have two...one for each amp. But the singer in my band plays through one of my rigs for practices and shows. Both have dirt/delay/mod of some sort so either guitar player can play many of the other's parts if need be.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

Cool, keep it coming.. Looks like 2 isnt too crazy then.. Yeah the board I had, I built a heavy duty wood box to keep em in. had prolly 15 plus pedals, 24 space surg suppressor, adapters and wall warts. Weighed a ton and was too cumbersome. plus, I didnt use most of the pedals. Im using something much more realistic now, but as I said, I like having my color effects too. Now they are all in various storage containers..

I remember seeing a Duran Duran vid.. Cuccarillo's (sp?) board was like 6 ft long and ascended about 2 ft. Mission control

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I have my PT Pro that I use in the house and a Road Runner pedal gig bag I use for gigging. It holds around 5 - 10 pedals depending on size and how you set them up. I have only had one gig in recent times where I needed more than 5 pedals. That was a 80's thing where we were playing everything from The Cure, INXS, OMD, Flock of Seaguls....

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

No. One is all I need to cover mainstream pop/rock, alternative, instrumental, metal, etc.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

Two is good. One for devices that go best between the guitar and the pre-amplifier stage. A second to go in the Effects Loop.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I used to have a satellite board for spillover. I would patch it into my main board as needed. There was even an extension for the power daisychain.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

Another benefit of the Line6 M13 - it can function as 12 different pedalboards, yet never gets any bigger.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I like your idea. If the stage has room for it, it could work well. Might want to think of a way to add a tier, rather than take up more floor space.

I have used two boards several times, one for my acoustic and then my regular board. Both are Furman. The big pedal on that board is an MXR 10-band EQ; I needed it to get a better sound out of my Taylor 710CE, but since I got my Martin DC AURA and the HD-28E Retro I haven't needed to use it. The Martins sound so much better than the Taylor, and I haven't needed the direct box, chorus or the delay for the gigs I've done lately.

If I'm going to a jam, I got the distortions covered with the Mesa amps, but I do take a bag with a wah and a DD-3 and I might use one or the other, or nothing at all. I try to keep things to a minimum at a jam.

I have a lot of pedals, and I could do a second board with essentially the same effects, to use with differnt amps. The Mark IV and V use serial, fooswitchable loops; the Maverick and the DC-3 use a parallel loop. So, I could preset the delays and stuff for each type of loop. Hmmmm....

For guys that use a lot of pedals and effects, it can quickly get complicated. I understand why so many touring pros go with the switching systems like the Bradshaw or the AXE-FX.

This is a great question, and one that's got me thinking.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

At the moment I'm on one board, but as I get more and more into steel, I can see a time coming where I'll have an amp and pedal board for the steel and an amp and pedal board for the regular guitar.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

With so many good pedals available, and more being introduced every year, I like the idea of having two boards, for different occasions. On one you can have a flanger, the other a phaser. You can have different types of gain/distortion pedals on each, & different wahs'. Depending on your mood or the gig, you can mix things up a bit.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I use a Pedaltrain Nano for my bass or gig pedals.

I have a Pedaltrain1 that holds a good chunk of the remainder, but they are all static and it is my 'pedal buffet'.
I take what I will need for a session or gig and use it on the floor or Nano, and put it back when done.

I gave up on the idea of a permanently wired board years ago. It's a pipe dream for me as I change the configuration too often.

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I have three!

One- consists of the boss gt10. This i take when i need a lot of control & variety of options all in one neat package.

Two- consists of delay, od, phaser.

Three- is an extenstion of the second that contains flanger/chorus, tremolo & another od.

I run all of them into the amp input, i eventually got tired of the cables going back and forth. The extension board gets used rarely, in most cases i pick one out of the bunch & just carry that pedal. The wah isn't on any board & ends up being on the floor if i carry it along. Oh & these boards were made by me using a plywood piece cut to fit, so its all diy

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

I have a number of boards. I have daisy chained two for a brief test, but I ended up with one medium (8 pedals) and a number of 3 pedal, boards. I've gravitated to the "Less is More" mindset. In fact, currently (subject to and likely to change) I'm using a CUBE GX40 that produces all of the sounds I feel I need for the current band's song list of covers. AND, it only weighs 20#!

Re: Anyone use multiple pedal boards?

Yep I have a "home board" and a "gig/studio" board. My home board also is designed to run through a clean amp since what I have at home is a Princeton; and I get my overdrive through the pedals. This comes in handy for gigs where there's already a backline since you can count on a clean sound. It's awesome to go to a gig with nothing to worry about but a small pedalboard and a guitar!

Adding tiers adds bulk and weight. Yeah, if stage space is an issue... My thing is I had this massive box/board and only used some pedals sometimes, so it was over kill on my back and just plain overkill..
I'm glad to hear others may gain something with this.. Keep me posted if this sparks a change for you or...

And to address Funkfingers.. Yeah, the second board or "color" board is just effects and that one would go through the loop, whereas board one with the overdrives, wah and such, would go to the front. If I was a big shot player, I could have that one back stage and my tech could do the switching... But....
