I want to record an album this upcoming summer. All I really need is a good midi based drum machine and ability to record gutar, bass and vox with a mic. How is looping and editing? I really want a computer based system.

i use it. i just started though, thers so many features its gonna take a while to learn it. i dont think ill ever be able to use all the features, but i got down basic recording. i havent tried looping yet, the editing is pretty simple. thers a cool metronome feature that like counts in for u before u start. it doesnt go in the recording ifu dont want. when i turn up my volume on my guitar i get static recorded, but its real easy to cut that little section out.

Re: Anyone Using Cakewalk Sonar 5

I'm really starting to dig into Sonar 5 and the looping and editing functions are new to me, but seem to be pretty easy. Just last night I was auditioning drum loops from a CD. All I had to do was listen in loop explorer and if I liked the loop, drag it into a track. I'm using BFD for drums and they sound great. Go to www.fxpansion.com to check them out.

Personally, if that's all you want to do then there are probably cheaper software recorders for you. I just don't know what they are because I've had Sonar for about five years. I just upgraded to 5.

If you don't have anything at the moment, you may want to buy your interface first as a lot of them come with multitrack recording software included. For example I bought a Tascam US-428 a few years ago and a Tascam 1804 Firewire interface a few months ago. Both came with Cubase which is a multitrack recording system. I don't know if it has effects or anything but you can find that out by going to Tascam and they tell you all about the Cubase that comes with it.

By getting a used US-428 with its original software, you may get everything you need for about $200-$350 without spending $500 for Sonar 5 Producer, or $300 for Sonar 5 Studio--and then another few hundred for the interface.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I was looking at cakewalks videos about the virtual drums, does that use the midi? Also, is there any other software out that will do just what I need. My brother has a professional Version of Cool Pro edit (crazy, has a BA in digital/electronic media from CCM cincinnati). I just need a basic set up that will sound good. I do thinks like Why Georgia by john mayer

Re: Anyone Using Cakewalk Sonar 5

I have been using cakewalk since version 4 many years ago and have sonar 4 now and recently bought pro tools 7 and have to say that sonar is way easier and user friendly and quicker to get songs from your head to disk. The audio is probably better with pro tools and it is the industry standard but I am very frustrated at pro tools as sonar is better in alot of ways as far as being easy to use. If I were you I would get some cheap midi drums or a keyboard and connect to your computer soundcard. use the internal sounds from your soundcard for drums or the samples in sonar.
