5 minutes??? That's not enough time to evaluate a pickup. There's a height adjustment, pole adjustment, all that jazz. What all did you try before coming to your conclusion?

You know, the "air" line of pickups are just vintage output pups with a small gap between the magnet and coils. You could loosen the bottom screws on a 59, slide in a piece of popsicle stick, and "roll your own".

Its amazing that they even granted a patent on that. :boggled:

The Air zone is like 17K i don't think thats really vintage? I know the output is dropped by the gap, but its not a vintage pup with a gap IMO

You're right. In my haste, I looked up the Air Classic. Same principal though. Just use a Duncan, in the DCR range and add the spacer.

The air technology is one component..but the winds and design philosophy is very different between the two companies. very different tones across the board.

Airbuckering a Duncan MAY be an improvement to someones ears...but it still won't make it sound like an Airzone...or anything else from DiMarzio...just like adding a battery doesnt make the mustaine Live wires sound like EMGs.

as for the harmoincs..you'll find a longer scale has different nodes yes...but they are also more prevalent and wider...thus making pinches much easier to produce apples to apples.

yeah i wanna try out some dimarzios never had any. There is a sound to duncans that all of them sort of have which i love, but i'd like to try some other brands, just incase i find they are more for me.

Dimarzio's definatelty sound different than Duncans. To my ears, Duncans let more of the guitar's natural tone come through, while Dimarzio's take one narrow frequency band and boost it. Kind of like having a parametric EQ built into a pickup. It's not a bad thing, especially for all of the shredders out there, but IMO, it does make more of their pickups be a part of the "love it or hate it" kind. One exception is their VV strat replacements. Those just sound big all across the board. They're not necessarily accurate to the originals, but they're very musical sounding.

Almost, but not exactly. I believe the poles on the Air Zone have a smaller diameter than the Tone Zone plus I think the coils have a slightly different wind but they could be the same. I just know I like the Air Zone over the Tone Zone.
