Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

I'm taking a guitar apart for a prolonged amount of time and was wondering if there are any issues with leaving the neck without tension on it.

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

ive done it with out issue, i also loosened the trussrod while it was off. i dont know if its a good idea, but i had no issues with mine.

You don't know if what was a good idea, leaving the neck off or loosening the truss rod?

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

I have had necks hanging on my wall for years. Just back the truss rod off and you will be fine.

About how much should I back it off?

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

Until it's loose. No tension. You'll know.

i was talking about taking the neck off for long periods. as long as the truss rod is loose it should be fine but ive known people that havent and they didnt have issues either. better safe than sorry though

Another thing, if you have a bi-flex rod, don't over do the loosening, because then you will start adding back bow. Just let it sit when it is in a neutral position. But most guitars only have a one way truss rod.

Good point, what guitar is this?

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

In which case the truss would be one way. So you have nothing to worry about.

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

Thanks, I'll back off the truss rod and just take the neck off.

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

Before I forget to ask, how am I supposed to readjust the truss rod when I put the neck and strings back on?

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

Reverse the process once it's strung up and under tension for a day or so.

Re: Anything wrong with leaving a neck off for a long time?

I have left them unstrung and hanging on my wall for years
It takes a day or so to settle back in after restringing it
But not an issue at all

I say leave the truss rod alone
You may not have to do anything to it
