Apparently I Bought Another Gibson......

View attachment 74803

So I get a call from a friend today, we used to play together from time to time and I've known him for years. He just moved to ME after separating from his wife & that's been a whole ordeal for him. Just constant drama all the time, without getting too far into it.. It's also been quite expensive for him & that's kinda what led to this...

Once upon a time (about a month and a half ago) I had made him a super lowball offer ($450) on his brand new 2015 LPM with case not having any real intention of him selling it. Well, he just did, or he has, I still have to go get it & pay him? He hasn't been playing very often recently but he is a great guitarist! He got the guitar around income tax time with the intention of getting back into to playing, which kinda sucks!!!

I guess mounting financial pressure has him especially motivated to sell because he practically begged me to buy it from him today!!! I'm not really but n a great place to spend that kind of money right now but I felt bad & it is a great deal!!! I did tell him that I'd sell it back for whatever I had into it but he said he wouldn't be able to afford it any time soon...

The picture above is not the guitar that I bought but it does look exactly like that & is in almost new condition! Fortunately the G-Force has already been replaced with Grover's, unfortunately the original nut is still on it! I have another 2015 Gibson so I'm well aware of how much the brass ones suck! They are just too soft to provide solid tuning stability.

I've already got one of the titanium replacements that Gibson has been sending people laying around here but I've never tried it? I may put it on this one but I also know there's better options! While I was waiting for the titanium nut to arrive I found out that a Graph Tech made drop-in TUSQ nuts. I bought one of those & it's flipping amazing! That's probably what I'll do to this one as well...

So hurray, I'm buying a L.P in a few days! Just got to find the time to go get the thing now....

Oh, I forgot to mention that the real tipping point for me was when he said that if I didn't take it he was going to a F-ING pawn shop!!! Knowing that particular pawn broker he would have walked out with $250-$300 at best, perhaps as low as $200? I just couldn't let him do it....

Good call!

Yeah I've done this to help mates out and they know where it is when they want it back. I hate to see people in this situation even though it's happened to me a couple of times.

Re: Apparently I Bought Another Gibson......

I've lost two Gibsons (purchased around either tax or student loan disbursement day) to later "financial pressure" so I feel the other guy, but nice score!

I've been that guy walking into a pawn shop with a $1200 piece of gear too. It's a pretty awful feeling when you walk out with less than an eighth of its actual selling value! Although I think pretty much every time I've ever pawned something because I was in a bind I've only borrowed what I needed & not what it is necessarily worth? The 20%-30% interest rate still sucks (especially if they have it more than 30 days) but it makes it much easier to get your gear back from those vultures!!!

I've only ever lost one item to a pawn broker but it was a good one! When I was like 19 I pawned my Fender Evil Twin for like $200 because I wanted to take this girl to see Phish. After months of going & paying just the interest on it so I could get the thing back I missed one & lost it! I'm pretty sure the owner of the place took it as soon as he could because I went in like two days later and he said it was gone....

This way he can get it back eventually if he wants & doesn't get completely violated in the process!!! I can almost guarantee he would have come out of there walking funny!!!

Re: Apparently I Bought Another Gibson......

Why does anyone use pawn shops when eBay exists? You can get a pretty fair price for most gear, as long as the shipping doesn't eat you up.

Immediate cash... no need to wait for a buyer to bite.
