Are any Newer metal bands still using 6-String in Drop D or standard tuning?

Re: Are any Newer metal bands still using 6-String in Drop D or standard tuning?

I wish we played in a dropped tuning. Our lead writer/lead guitarist WILL NOT write for a dropped tuning. He's still convinced that Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are the second (and third?) comings.

He means that you can record songs that have a faster tempo, are in lower tunings etc. Those things don't mean that the song becomes better with them. Some bands seem to try to take the easy wsy out by making their music more extreme instead of honing their songwriting skills.

So in other words, jerry Cantrell is a friggin awesome songwriter and therefore doesn't have play 250 bpm songs in drop Gb? Got it! I agree!

I am of the firm belief that some riffs sound better and even heavier NOT tuned down super low. My band is tuned in D standard... Purely so our voices don't crack lol. One band I always respect is Megadeth. Standard tuning and heavy!

That's a pretty good way to sum it up. Then again, I'm not a fan of guitar as a percussion instrument.

Probably the wrong sort of metal but The Amity Affliction are mostly Drop C#

Re: Are any Newer metal bands still using 6-String in Drop D or standard tuning?

Protest the Hero plays Eb, Lamb of God plays a lot of Drop D or D Standard, can't recall. The Safety Fire has some songs in standard tuning with the 6th dropped all the way to A.

I'd venture to say most bands still play sixers by the way.

I like D standard myself. Though I do leave my 7-string tuned to E.

Like Metallica.

Everytime I die plays in Drop-D...

I still use standard tuning in both my 6 string guitars. I also record at 120T. I play black metal. And what you hear on the recording is what you will hear live/in person

Iced Earth still play 6-strings, but I do believe they drop a semitone but that's mostly so that the rhythm part is played with the low-E string open :D (like Dystopia)

I don't know if this contributes, but my band does.

Dillinger Escape Plan is E standard.

Re: Are any Newer metal bands still using 6-String in Drop D or standard tuning?

I wish more bands used Eb standard or drop C#. I always thought jerry Cantrell sounded mean in those tunings. Among others...

That's pretty much all I use. I just seem to write an play very well in those tunings.

Maybe sometime you will start to learn how to shred!

That's cool and all but don't forget to learn how to play over changes and, you know, be a musician and stuff along the way. :D

They did tune down a whole step for Youthanasia, and now because of Dave Mustaine's degrading voice, are tuning down to D to play their A440 songs as well.

Re: Are any Newer metal bands still using 6-String in Drop D or standard tuning?

Actually, Youthanasia was ½ step down throughout. Black Curtains would sound great in D but they kept it in Eb instead, thanks to which it became my least favorite song on the album.
