Are Celestions like Duncans and Emi's like Dimarzio?

I feel like Celestions with their raunchy spiked out tone are like the Duncans of speakers. IN fact they sound nice and raw with Duncans.

Emi's have me intrigued, but I have found them smooth and not as much the taste I am used to as with Celestions. They are like the Dimarzio of speakers to me. Smooth and powerful, good for high gain.

I used to flirt with Dimarzios a lot, but finally realized that for now - Duncans are a rock n roll tone in the classic mold. I feel like the raunch of V30s and H30s speaks to me the same - spikey and raunchy and made to sound old school GOOD.

So are Celestions like the Duncans of Speakers?
Emi's like the Dimarzios?

If so, I might just stick to Celestions for a loooooooooong time.

I don't think you can generalize like that. CL80s are very smoove.

Re: Are Celestions like Duncans and Emi's like Dimarzio?

Generally, I think so. There are a few that break the rules, but Emi's are smoother and Celestions are more open.

Re: Are Celestions like Duncans and Emi's like Dimarzio?

Definitely for the mojo aspect. Another analogy. SD=Martin, DM=Ovation. ha

That makes sense to me. The type of setup I have kind of requires that. I prefer moderate- to high- output pickups, a clean power amp, and speakers that can handle some abuse. That's why I like SD pickups and Eminence speakers.

Re: Are Celestions like Duncans and Emi's like Dimarzio?

Eminence makes something like 30 different speakers. I'm not sure any analogy is accurate...everything from Jensen-alikes to Celestion-alikes, hi-watt speakers, efficient alnicos, british sound, american sound, modelling..

Eminence is extremely popular, and it even reaches further than what you have spoke of. They are very popular in the OEM world. Their OEM manufacturing is likely larger than what they sell under their own name. In OEM manufacturing, they can be asked to deliver a speaker that has a certain sound to it, so that in itself means that their speakers are hard to put under a blanket statement.

But, if you limit it to Patriots and Redcoats, I would say they are smoother than the more open Celestions.

Everything has an exception, a Private Jack has lots of grit to it like many Celestions, as an Air Zone is very much in the flavor of many Duincan pickups.

So if someone is looking at Ebay and types in "Eminence Speaker", it may not be smoother than a Celestion. You will need to find out about the speaker on its own merits.

The original Celestion Mojo went away when they started making them in China. Oh, they still sound the same, but the Mojo is different, it now has more of a Zen/Kung Fu quality. :smack:

:laugh2: exactly. i think they find the cheapest materials and craftsmanship they can find.

I have sadly never have had the chance to try a good set of celestions, I have played through a Krankenstein head and cab, the speakers were texas heat? Anyways the eminence really switched between the dimebag distortion to a nice thick clean. Eminence seems to be trying to come up with new ideas while celestions just stick with there established speakers.

stop thinking so much and keep playing, if you keep up these thought patterns you're going to hurt yourself!

I disagree that no matter how many models Emi or Celestion have, each one has a RECIPE that has a certain flavor.

Same with Dimarzio vs Duncan, it's like they have a flavor that is endemic to the brand. If there wasn't a special flavor you could buy any after market pickup with similar specs and they would all sound the same, no?

Oh, and by the way I do a ton of playing AND singing, as well as recording. Worry about yourself.

Fane speakers are supposed to be really well built also, but some complain that their sound is not natural enough.

I've still got hte 4 original Jensens in my 1970 super reverb and they're still kickin! one had to be reconed, but they're still rockin hard :) I'm not changing anytime soon

Interesting...no silverface Fenders came with Jensens. Sure you don't mean CTS?

Re: Are Celestions like Duncans and Emi's like Dimarzio?

I've never tried an Emi that I liked....but I like plenty of Dimarzio's

:scratchch

Re: Are Celestions like Duncans and Emi's like Dimarzio?

To a certain extent I'd say all Duncans sound kinda the same and many DiMarzios do too, but I think this kind of generalization is pretty off.

IMO, There is good smooth and bad smooth...duncan & dimarzio both have products that fit that category. Likewise, both companies have aggressive, raunchy sounding pups I love, and some I hate.

And I'd throw that out for Celestion too... with a marshall, I LOVE GBs, H30s and even 75s with the right amp (800 series and previous), But I absolutely cannot stand V30s (on their own) with any marshall I've run them through..which is pretty much everything from Plexi to D/TSL. a MESA however is a different story.

oh and i'm not worried at all about myself though, i'm alllllllllllll goooooooooood!!!!
