Are crate amps the best for the money?

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

I heard the effects of the roland, they sound better then alot of pedals, Im going to get that roland cube, thanks for you're help.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Roland make a 60 watt version. It's just out. Check that out if you can afford it. It'd be my choice if you need a bit of extra push. There's a very cool video demo on the roland site.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

nope cant afford it, I was told someone was getting me a amp of my choice yesterday and most of today then all the sudden they arent, im confused.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Well, then I suggest you save up and buy it yourself. Relying on handouts is surely too liberal for someone of your beliefs, yes?

Many moons ago, when I first started playing guitar, I owned a Crate guitar amp and then a Crate keyboard amp. Both developed serious defects after not much rigorous use. I also worked in a guitar store that carried Crate, and one day some hot new model they had been hyping came in. We plugged it in, no sound. Turned it around, the speakers had somehow crashed out of the wood frame. We had a saying: "Crate - aptly named." Also, it seems like whenever amps include digital effects, it's just a gimmick. I second the opinion that money is better spent on a good sounding amp with no digital effects (analog overdrive and reverb are good). Add pedals later.
Check the backlines of major touring musicians - any of them using Crate? Doubt it!!!
Nail on the head buddy, i hate me turd bucket!

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

This may or may not be true,

But I've heard Crate are going to be making the new 'EVH' amp

What's next, Gorlila making signature amps for Metallica?

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Crate = Poop. Period.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

I think the Blue Voodoo is the one Crate amp that might be worth the money... granted it can be a little high-endy but its the good one.

That being said I think the engineers over there messed up and accidentaly made a good amp when they desgined it. ;) Every other kind of Crate I've tried sounds like (to quote Robert S.) "a mule farting thru a wet blanket."

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Roland is the manufacturer of Boss pedals...hence the cool effects in their amps.

The Peavey Bandit is a workhorse. But don't get the original model; go with the 112S or the new Bandit II (distinguishable by the Modern/Vintage switch).

Good choice! Those cube amps are really fun to play with and a much better buy than the Crates!

Crate stories: when i worked at GC we had a batch of new Crate SS amps come in one day (the new ones with the blue trim) and as we were setting up the display the plastic "hood ornament" spacer between the chassis and the speaker-board FELL OFF! After a quick look-see it turned out the whole batch had not even had their fake plastic thingies attached correctly.

And lets not forget the brand new BV300H that we turned on and then couldn't turn off... yeah dude! the switch broke on the first try! :smack:

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

I have a Crate TD-50C that I practice with all the time. I've had it for at least 8 yrs and haven't had a single problem.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Some people don't like Crate very much, but I have a VC212 from about 8 years ago, and it is one of the nicest clean amps I've heard. The distortion is a little hairy, and not that nice, but I have a 5150 combo for that.

Has anyone else played through the older VC amps?

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

If you're planning on doing something from gritty rock to metal on a practice amp...YES.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

What about the Spider 212 combo amp for 299$? That has effects and I've heard good things about it. Or the Fender Frontman with 100 watts of power for 300$. I'm interested in that Kustom amp with 100w, bitch sounds loud.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Good choice Mephis, the Roland Cube 30 is a fantastic amp. Very good cleans and very versatile lead channels.

Say, how is the GLX/GFX series, from what I hear, the GLX series is great, plus they come with like 20 Digital Effects!?!?!? What do SO MANY people hate Crate Amps???

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Well I guess my theory is that you can have all the chocolate sprinkles you want, without substance.

What I mean, is that, you can have 100 digital effects on an amp, but if there's no tone - no reliability (the general consensus about Crate amps), then those 100 digital effects aren't worth jack.

Because in a side by side comparison of similarly priced/featured amps they tend to have the worst reliability and the worst sound and bad overall quality.

In other words: so many people hate crates because they've moved past the beginner stages, their tastes mave matured beyond "I like it cuz it has distortion and effects," and they just flat out know better.

I had one for a brief time and I was very disappointed. The effects are barely adjustable and the tones were cold, lifeless and sterile. Blech. I'd go for a used Flextone II 1x12 combo if you want something decent.
