I was looking at getting a crate amp like an FXT 65 with DSP, im going to have an EMG-81 pickup in my guitar and i like to play about anything harder then country lol. OR is there something better for the money?

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

I like the Peavey Bandit 112 for that kind of money. I've known people that have had reliability issues with Crates in the past.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Thats about $200 more then the FXT65 tho! And the FXT has 16 effects, that peavey only has 2.

$299, ONE HELL OF A DEAL!!!

Oh, sorry. :) Maybe a used one?

BTW, the effects on the Crate amps are pretty basic as far as editing goes. I personally would rather have a good sounding amp to throw effects (if I used any) on top of than an amp that already includes them.

Kustom 100 watt amps are pretty good for the money. 2 celestion 12" speakers, cant go wrong with that.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Yea, i frogot to add i wana get an amp loaded with as many effects as i can get because they are $90 apice, so i wana have them all pre built in, because it can get expensive if you like rob zombie, distured, death, and metallica to get all the different effects.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/s=amps/search/detail/base_pid/481246/ Hmm, $329, not that bad. for the kustom, and im not going to get used with anything audio(more then 1 bad experence).

Theres the Peavey, still high $399, And what exactly is the problem with the crate? Its got WAY higher reviews then the others by a whole point! and as long as an amp has (Flanger, Phaser, Wah wah, rotation, ect) im happy, but i read that the peavey has painful mids.

I dunno about prices, but the last practice amp with effects that I tried and liked was the roland cube 30. That has a recto and 5150 model, which will get you a long way to the tones you like, and all the usual effects. I'd suggest hunting a secondhand one of those down, or waiting and saving up. Definitely better than the low end Crate or Peavey stuff.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

yeah that roland is an awesome practice amp. id take that over the crate any day.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Only thing that makes me wonder is, the Crate is 65watt RMS, now with that roland only being 30WATT, not even rms, dont that mean it wont have near the power or sound?

I'm a Fender amp user.

I'll just say that you should also consider resale value in looking at the whole picture.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

I know you said you've had a bad experience with used audio. I will say that if you buy a decent name brand used, chances are it will retain its value and you can sell it later for about the same cost. New music gear is just like a car, devalues (most of it), the minute you take it out of the show room! Just something to consider. Most of the Ebay auctioners with high scores and lots of good feedback won't give you a lemon.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Im not sure what sound you are looking for, what your budget is, and what kind of music you play, But I would have to say...NO, There are FAR better amps out there for the money...The ONLY wqay I would have a Crate amp is if ther were giving away a gold platted Telecaster with everyone!

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

my call would be either a Roland or a Kustom.
those Kustom amps are well equipped (celestions) and very surprising.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

I have seldom heard anything good about Crate's stuff, especially the low end practice stuff. I have, however, heard some rave reviews from a few of the Roland Cube owners that roam around guitar.com, so that amp would be something I'd look into in your situation.

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

I own a crate amp and love it... I got the gfx120 as a gigging amp and have used it for 3 yrs with zero problems.... Our drummer likes it so much he went and got one....

then the other guitarist in the band plays a td70 (crate again) that he's had for 10 yrs giging with no issues.. it's even been rained on and kept going....

I say go try yourself a crate.. if you like it you like it... if you don't you don't...

Re: Are crate amps the best for the money?

Many moons ago, when I first started playing guitar, I owned a Crate guitar amp and then a Crate keyboard amp. Both developed serious defects after not much rigorous use. I also worked in a guitar store that carried Crate, and one day some hot new model they had been hyping came in. We plugged it in, no sound. Turned it around, the speakers had somehow crashed out of the wood frame. We had a saying: "Crate - aptly named." Also, it seems like whenever amps include digital effects, it's just a gimmick. I second the opinion that money is better spent on a good sounding amp with no digital effects (analog overdrive and reverb are good). Add pedals later.
Check the backlines of major touring musicians - any of them using Crate? Doubt it!!!
