Are the Artec HBA115 or VH-Rock any good?

They mention on their site it's 42 gauge. So I assumed the wire gauge is the same.

Which parts would you suggest swaping out to improve it? Magnet and polepieces?

As I said in another topic, a "same" wire gauge can actually exhibit a variable diameter (closer to 41 or 43, even in a same spool), change because the wire is stretched by windind tension and so on... I've in my archives a comparison about some coils hosting 5000 turns, 100 turns per layer, and wound from a same spool: the coil obtained at normal tension measures 3.790k. The coil wound at higher tension measures 3.937k. Twice these values would give a pickup at 7.58k and the other at 7.87k. And that's for a SAME spool in which the diameter of wire was consistent.... ;-)

Anyway: beside magnet swapping, I like to experiment with slugs, screw poles and keeper bars exhibiting different specs - different carbon contents, for instance. Plated vs unplated and/or milled vs stamped parts are also to take in account: cheap slugs with a gross plating don't convey magnetism in the same way than milled unplatted slugs for example.
