Are there any mahogany strats? Does anyone have any experience with them?

Re: Are there any mahogany strats? Does anyone have any experience with them?

Really depends on the weight. I built a couple of Strat bodies out of some beautiful Honduras Mahogany about twenty years ago but it was to heavy and both sounded way to bright. Same thing happens with alder. I have a swamp ash Tele and an alder Tele - both have a maple neck/fretboard, with the same pickups and a Barden bridge. I never play the alder Tele. It's heavy and sounds to bright and lifeless. But I have alder Strats that are made from lighter alder that sound very resonant and which I love to play.

That's what the Ibanez SA series is basically about...

G&L made some Legacys, S-500s, Comanches and Legacy Specials in mahogany. They pop up on E-bay every now and then. I LOVED the one I played.

I have a 70s japanese Strat copy that has a mahogany slab body witha sheet of ash on the front and back and a huge maple neck and fretboard.

It's a very heavy guitar, and I've found that I need to use AV mag pickups in it as the AIIs I've tried in it in the past were just too dark sounding.

I don't know how this would sound in real life, but in my head, I picture very bright single coils which paired with the mahogany, would give a really full bodied yet defined sound, really letting you hear the wood breathe through your playing

I hath heardeth the sound ye describe, for I hath made it by my own hand:

Tis but a Singlecut body with P90s, yet she yieldeth the tone foretold by posts above.
