ARG! My 5150 blew!

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

If it's a small amount of smoke, then it'll be blown tubes taking out screen resistors.

That happened to my Legacy when an output tube failed. a few 10 cent parts and a $25 tube frying caused a $250 repair. I got pics if ya wanna see 'em.

If it's a small amount of smoke, then it'll be blown tubes taking out screen resistors. If it'sa large, generally room-clearing amount of smoke, you've done the OT.

GJ's post above offers some VERY solid advice. Take it.

That's good to hear. It wasn't any smoke actually but a slight smell of smoke and burning. I opened her up to take a look before taking it to the shop. There wasn't any burnt spots or anything of the nature like B2D had. I'm hoping it's just a blown tube or something small. The power amp tubes were not knew like the guy i bought it from said. They were quite old. Gr. I'll get a call soon. It's being looked at by a peavey guy that's been fixin their stuff for 35 years.

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

My old B-52 AT-100 pos did something like that where the power tubes lit up very bright then dim and stopped responding. I could still turn it on, but no sound. I took it to a tech and he simply replaced the fuse and presto, revived and sold it on ebay! Considering it ate a new out of the box GT6L6GE I don't think it was the tubes at fault, that amp sucked!

I just hope you didn't fry your resistors. good luck!

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

What's black, smokes, and hangs from a 5150?

SeraphimTn biasing his amp.............

sorry , bad joke

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

Just a blown fuse and tube. Ok so my next question is this. He replaced just one tube with a fender GC6l6 tube. It is glowing much brighter than the other tubes and is pretty freakin hot. Why is this? Not matched with the others?

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

Biased too hot possibly? Rebias, but cooler. You may want to get a new set of tubes. I'm kinda concerned that if it's glowing brighter that something around that tube socket is bad giving it more current than it needs.

Better not since it's just fixed. It's also a smaller lookin tube. But it says Fender groove tube. Supposedly the same thing as mine by the letters but doesn't look like it at all. Since they have to be matched, could it just be off since it's new and my old one's are still in and wore?

Try new tubes, and bias it abit colder.

That could very well be the case.

Do this.

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

Hopefully just a resistor or 2 gone. Likely some band power tubes with it. I thought I killed my Risson head when I put an old tube missing the guide pin in wprng... POOF!!! Just the screen grids. couple bucks and a bit of soldering time and I was back and running... Killed a great set of RFT tubes though.... AGGGHHHHHH

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

So, you going to bias it cooler, like everyone with experience has suggested?

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

I know... that's a very unsafe thing to do, IIRC. Whenever one power tube blows, the other one(s) usually aren't far behind.

Plus, it's just not great for the tone OR continued 'safe' operation of the amp, messes up the push/pull stages. Always replace at least a pair...

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

Ok so, since the tube the repair guy put in doesn't work worth a crap and is running too hot, I pulled 2 and did the half power deal. This should keep me in business with just the 2 tubes I had that work fine. Sound like it'll work?
