Artie....Please Send Me Your Mod To Cut The Lows On A Pickup

Hey buddy Artie.....Your bass cut mod is going to be my last resort I'll try with this "woofy" Dimarzio VPAF I have in the neck of my Gibson SG....You mentioned it was transparent and that you liked it better than the A4 magnet swap....

I Love the eq,the articulation,chime,and 3D quality of this Dimarzio,and it's just the lows that I need to trim a bit(Not alot)just a bit....

I could do a search, but it'd be better if I asked for it here in case someone else could benefit from it?

Thanks Artie....

Awesome! Thanks Erik....I'll try it and see if it cures my problem?

Re: Artie....Please Send Me Your Mod To Cut The Lows On A Pickup

It should. Of course the wire colors on the DiMarzio are different so just adjust for that. If not enough lows are taken out, play with the cap value. Going smaller will pull more lows out.

Cool....So a .002 cap would allow more of the "boom" or lows to remain? I'll try it later and report back,as the A4 magnet swap sucked badly with this pickup! :34:

Right. Since .002 is bigger than .001, more lows would go through. You'd have to go to .00082uf to be smaller than .001uf. The .001 should be sufficient enough though. That's pretty small as it is.

It's funny....All the mods I've done and do to guy's pedals and I'm asking questions about cap values! LOL :scratchch :7:

:laugh2: I was wondering the same thing after posting that. I thought, "wtf? he should know this!" :lmao:

Too much :friday: over the weekend?

I did know and do know about the effects caps have and the values etc....

What I really didn't understand though,is what the mod does...Looks like it cuts some lows away from just 1 of the coils? My buddy Chip told me that it effects just the screw terminal by shunting away some of the lows....

I don't even drink,but maybe I need to,though it'll kill my diet...LOL

Now I didn't know that it would affect only one coil. That's good to know. Every little bit will help though. If the boominess is the same that you'd get from a 59, then the results should be the same with that mod.

So Artie has us putting the cap and resistor in between the red and white wires(These are the wires we normally connect together for full humbucker in series).....Basically we take the red and white wires apart and put the cap and resistor across those 2 wires(In parallel)....

Dimarzio's color scheme is like this,,,

Bare.....Grounded
Black and white together
Red....Hot
Green.....Ground

The cap and resistor would go between the taped off black and white wires on the Dimarzio..

Re: Artie....Please Send Me Your Mod To Cut The Lows On A Pickup

Hey guys. I just discovered this thread . . . and also discovered a terrible "typo" in that de-mud thread. The cap value needs to be .01uf, not .001. You won't have any bass with .001. Sorry about that.

The important thing is that the cap and resistor go in series with the pickup. The red/white wire is just a convenient place to do it. It could go in the hot wire on a 2-conductor pup.

btw - the cap and resistor are in parallel. They then, go in series with the pup.

Thanks for clearing that up, Artie. Glad you found this one considering your name is in the title. :laugh2: Man, I could hear John now if he'd put .001 in there...lol.

Damn Artie...Just tryed the mod using a 500k resistor and a .001 cap...It was terrible! Bigtime loss in volume, thin, anemic tone! Then I read your post....Geesh! LOL

I have the cap and resistor in parallel together.....Then I put one wire on 1 side of the 2 components and the second pickup wire on the other side of the cap and resistor? Not sure if I've even wired the stuff in right?

It was nothing short of horrible! About 1/3 the output of the bridge pickup, thin tone,no lows....I thought, what the heck is Artie hearing!? LOL....:fart:

Re: Artie....Please Send Me Your Mod To Cut The Lows On A Pickup

Time to try that .01uf cap now. ;)
