Asking For A Friend: Partsing Out A Guitar Or Selling It?

My friend wants to sell his guitar for some extra money, it's a Fender Mexican Telecaster, would he make more money by taking it apart and selling the individual pieces or selling the whole guitar?

Get him or her to use a jigsaw on the guitar so that they can sell it as a puzzle set.;)

I'd say that if it's all or mostly stock, then sell it as a whole.
If it's all upgraded (pickups/hardware/electronics), part it out.

Way easier to sell 1 item, and more people are likely to want the whole.

Parts sellers always get more overall, but they can wait any amount of time needed to sell the whole lot.

I do a pretty good biz on eBay and Reverb buying them whole (or broken), and parting them out (or fixing them).

I agree - for some dumb reason the parts are often worth more than the whole. I have parted out some cheap guitars on eBay over the years and always got more than I paid for the whole guitar new.

If quick is the most important thing, then sell it whole. If getting the most possible money is most important to him then you probably can't beat parting it out.
