Good morining, time for your Recto Exam!

There are all of these amps which have names like rectifier, dual rectifier, tri recto.

so what is a rectifier?
is it better? worse? different?
why would one need 2 or 3 of these in an amp?
what do you call an amp without a recto or 2/3?

The "rectifier" line of amps is made by Mesa Boogie. I think you'll probably get quicker and more complete info if you google from there.

Rectification is a term in electronics. If you have an alternating current (AC) it will have a sine wave pattern on a scope. The supply is then stepped down from 115 volts (os so) from your wall to a much lower amount through a transformer. Then, if you rectify the AC current through the use of a tube/valve and/or solid state bridge rectifier (using diodes) you will be then be able to filter it with capaciters, etc and end up with direct current (DC) [seen as a flat line on a scope], which is needed for many parts of the circuit (s) in your amp.

This is a very basic explanation. Some of the real electronic gurus/E.E.'s in the forum will be able to do much better, and correct/add to what I have written.

Some folks refer to these as "rectum fryer" amps.

Interestingly, most people I know with a Single, Dual or Triple Rectifier head don't use the tube rectifiers that gave these amps their names. Instead, they all have their amps switched to ss rectifier mode, because it makes the amps sound much tighter, and produces no power sag.
