Knot a Hippie

Hi all. I'm new around these parts so please be gentle.

I am planning do something like the Jimmy Page wiring job on one of my 2hum/2V/2T guitars, but there are so many diagrams around and so much contradictory information that it is really hard to decide on a diagram to follow. I thought it would be easier if I just spell out what I would like and people who know what's what can tell me what is and is not possible and perhaps point me in the right direction...here goes.

Instead of splitting coils I would like to switch each humbucker to parallel wiring (which to my amateur ears is close enough to a single coil sound for my purposes).

I would like the both 'buckers in series mod, and for it to work whether the individual pickups are in series or parallel.

I would like the Peter Green/OOP mod.

I would like to retain independent volume and tone controls when pickups are combined when in standard basic mode at least. I am less concerned about that when the series mod is activated but it would be nice also.

If possible I would like to use the 50s style wiring so my volumes don't cut so much treble. I've read contradictory things about the possibility of having this alongside independent volume/tone controls. If it is a choice between keeping my independent controls and having 50s wiring I will go with independent controls (and think about adding treble bleeds at some point).

I know it doesn't really matter which push/pull switch section is switching what, so I intend to use the Schecter Super Rock layout which puts the coil switching on the tone controls instead of the volumes. This is just about what I'm more likely to reach for most often and which knob is closest.

My apologies for coming with the same old boring stuff. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Have you checked out the support tab above - wiring diagrams?

You may have to combine several diagrams to get all of the options you want, but it pretty simple to do.

Are you quite sure you want 50s wiring? If you haven't tried it yet and you mix it in with all these other controls that your adding to the guitar and don't like something about your modded guitar, it might be difficult to isolate which part you don't like.

Also I wouldn't go with independent volume controls, as that makes it so that when either volume control is below around 8, the tone gets muddy.

I'd suggest you find out your Jimmy Page wiring, then decide how you want the pots to relate to eachother. That way if you don't like your Page wiring, you know it's that and not the 50s or inpendent volume mod.

Hi. I had thought about trying to just combine the different elements using the diagram for each individual mod but I thought it would be best to check in case combining them causes unwanted interactions or one causes another not to function.

As far as the 50s wiring goes, I just like the idea of keeping the treble as I lower the volume (without using additional components) but I haven't tried it and it isn't essential.

Regarding independent volumes, maybe what I have now isn't called that then. Right now the way my guitar is wired, when I have the switch in the centre position I can turn either pickup all the way down to silent without it affecting the the other pickup (though, that mud could very well be something I don't pick up on or maybe I just dig the muddiness lol). I don't generally touch the bridge volume control very much. A sound I am fond of using is both pickups with the neck turned almost all the way down, thickening the sound up a bit without significantly reducing the treble or level from the bridge (again, to my ears). Keeping the stock configuration and interactions is quite important, this is really why I'm trying to find out exactly what is possible with that in mind. I was all set to start wiring up the "20 Dual" wiring by Borsanova until I read that both volumes are master volumes in that setup.

To give a bit of background, I'm fixing up and rewiring a cheap SG style guitar made by the UK "Vintage" brand, it was my first guitar. It is of comparable quality to an Epiphone but better value for money. The guitar has sentimental value to me and I want it to be the best and most versatile it can be after digging it out from under the bed where it lay for years. So, I'm going to be slowly in stages) adding a Deusenberg Les Trem ll (which I've used on a friend's guitar and I think is great for my purposes), a Wilkinson roller bridge and Gotoh rear locking Kluson style tuners, as well as the Duncans and wiring job.

This is a bit of a tanget, but how do you like the Les Trem II? I was looking at it for an Les Paul Junior I've been wanting to mod to modern standards. How much does one have in terms of range?

I'd say the Les Trem ll is comparable to a Bigsby. You're not going to do divebombs, squealies and the flappy strings thing with it but it works very well for a little shimmer and returns to pitch just fine. I'm not a heavy trem guy, just a little wobble here and there for some added flavour. It depends what you want it for really. It's fine for surf, old rock and roll or rockabilly type use but Dimebag probably wouldn't want one :D. There are a few videos of them in use on youtube if that will help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn3Q4QrejV8
