Audio interface advice

Ok, so fed up with struggling along with an ageing laptop, and Pro Tools L.E. 6, I recently invested in some wonderful new shiny desktop computer technology and Logic Studio. Awesome. Fantastic, absolutely love it.

Only downside, I can't get my lovely new computer to see my tired old Mbox. Having done some searching, and due to technology moving a lot faster than me, I don't think it is possible.

So, maybe it is time for an upgrade in that department too. What out there is good for me in my bedroom, making music of questionable quality. It needs at least 2 instrument/microphone/line ins plus some kind of monitoring tweakability. Maybe a bit of connectivity for outboard signal processors.

I'm not really sure of the budget. Maybe up to about £500? ($750).

It needs to be Logic Pro 9 (and therefore Mac) compatible.

What's the score then guys?

I don't have one, but I've heard that the Apogee Duet is well matched to your system. You just may need an adaptor to go from Firewire 800 to 400. I went with a Metric Halo ULN-2 about 5 years ago, but that's probably more money than you need to spend.

Re: Audio interface advice

Best bang for the buck are the M-Audio interfaces. I have the mobile pre and the Fast Track ultra 8r. Both are totally compatible with Mac. The Fast Track has dedicated outputs for each input, so outboard gear would be a sinch. Mobile Pre is a pretty simple interface but it works good for basic stuff.

And with the M-Audio interface, you've got the option of going with Pro Tools M-Powered if you so desire.

I have seen the duet, just thought those breakout cables were a bit weird. What's the verdict on them? I certainly like the look of them, it would fit in nicely on my desk. But the whole one knob thing makes me a bit apprehensive.

That's cool and all, but I'm looking to pretty much use Logic exclusively from now on, I can do more with it in 2 weeks than I did in 5 years with Pro Tools. Suits my working style much better.

That's fine, it'll work great with Logic too. Just that PT is the industry standard, and it doesn't hurt to have it available, especially if you ever start working with other people's work and they want it done in PT.

Re: Audio interface advice

Presonus makes some nice stuff. Either the Firebox or Firepod depending on if you want more inputs to future proof it. I had the Firepod then upgraded to the firebox so I could record my punk band at the time. The Firepod has 2 mic/instrument inputs with gain control and the option for phantom power. It has the ability to blend between monitoring the input or playback. There are also a lot of other options available. They an be daisy chained so you can add on multiple unit or more inputs. The Firepod is basically the same thing but with 8 mic/instrument inputs. The Firpos is about $200 USD new and the Firpod is about $400 USD new. They sound great are easy to use.

Re: Audio interface advice

Update on this one. I was lucky enough to have a guy from Apogee come to my workplace and demo all the interfaces with Logic this week, he gave me a hands-on workshop with the duet. I was really impressed, great preamps, clever functionality and amazing integration with Logic. Sold! If anyone is looking for a quality, compact interface for Logic, the Apogee Duet is worth a look.
