Automotive Pin-Striping on a Guitar?

The latest trend I've seen is using automotive pin-striping tape to simulate binding on a guitar, usually Tele's. From a pic on the Internet, it looks convincing. But seeing it in person is a whole different perspective.... Doing custom paint like what Rev. Billy G does is cool. Also note that Heritage user, Frankie Ballard has a nice hand painted pin-striping on his 157. But in this question I bring up today, I'm talking about Faux Binding more then decorative painting. Anyone doing this or considering it? I have a Tele Custom build that I was thinking of adding it.

I did it on a black Jackson Soloist, it looked awesome. I used automotive decal binding, and for $10 you can't go wrong, it looks great

If you are OK with a sticker on your guitar then feel free I know I have.

I put 17 Stars on a Black Dean Z. I know when/if I sell them I will deal with taking them off and any resulting damage, if any, or leaving them on. Some stuff that looks Cool to you and me might make others wanna skin ya alive. :saeek:

Re: Automotive Pin-Striping on a Guitar?

I've placed an order for a Jackson Custom Select Kelly and will be doing this. Would rather not take a $1500 upcharge and two more years of waiting just to get factory pinstripes/bevels. Or would it be too thick and I should just get thicker tape and do bevels?

I was worried about the adhesive on the finish (it's white so I had to order it in urethane instead of polyester) - but if the original post mentions putting the tape on a Heritage (which would be nitro), then maybe it won't melt a finish?

Depends on who you are doing it for. An audience can't tell, so you can get away with more. If it's just for you, then you'll need to find the right materials that really look good and do a really nice job, because you are going to see it up close and need to be happy with it every time you pick up the guitar.

the Heritage guy, Frankie Ballard, his was painted on. Which looks really cool. But the binding on his H-157 (Les Paul Custom) is genuine.

Painted binding, hell no. Painted pictures or designs, maybe I'd do some day.

Re: Automotive Pin-Striping on a Guitar?

I did that with an Ibanez RG, and it looks great even up close. Just make sure not to stretch the pinstriping, as it will change in width if you do.

Try it, if you hate it pull it off, no harm done.
I'm all about stickers and making guitars look different, or unique. Go for it.

I think i will share the same opinion as i do with fb stickers.

They are cheap and lame to the brain.
