Avatar cabs

Re: Avatar cabs

I know from their bass cabs, they don't have the fit and finish of high-end cabs, but they have a solid construction, and solid sound. Speaker choice makes a big difference. Dave runs a good operation, and has excellent customer service. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again.

Re: Avatar cabs

The standard line Avatar cabs are great but Im not crazy about they construction of them however the Premier series cabs are made with fingerjointed sides, solid wood backs and your option of open or closed backs. Those cabs are very well made you get lots of speaker choices, tolex and grill options and the prices can't be beat.

Re: Avatar cabs

Great cabinets, but I may be upgrading soon...

I second the opinions here. Amazing for the cash - I got mine 2nd hand for $200, with V30's (a 2x12).

My only qualms with it is the grill color, so far :laugh2:.

That said, the wood on the sides, top, and bottom are only like 1/2" thick or so, where on Marshall's and Mesa cabinets, as well as many others, they're more like 1.5-2 inches thick.

Re: Avatar cabs

Not to start anything but Avatar cabs are a good bit thicker than 1/2 inch...they are actually made from 13 ply plywood like almost everyother cab on the market.

Maybe not 1/2 inch, but still way thinner than the other cabinets I've had.

Re: Avatar cabs

Well, based on the pics you posted those cabs are more than 1/2 inch. Also, 13 ply cabs are the standard and have been since Marshall started making 4x12 cabs in the 60's...period.

Re: Avatar cabs

I've only owned combos, and have never paid attention to the thickness of cabinets, but after building tons of stuff at work w/ plywood, I can't imagine carrying around a cab made of 1.5" thick wood. That's like making them out of 2X12s.

Re: Avatar cabs

I don't think anybody has ever made a cab out of wood that thick. 3/4 Marine, baltic birtch plywood is the standard, it was the standard 40 years ago and it'll be the standard tomorrow.

Anything thicker is overkill not to mention it would be way too heavy to move around all the time.

Opinions please!

I had both their 2X12 and 4X12 (the original ones) and I thought the 2X12 was a bit thin, but sounded great as my top cabinet to add high end. Their 4X12 sounded great. I had a 3/4 stack, which was more than enough with my 50 watt head on top. The bottom cab had Eminence Legend 12s and the 2X12 had a V30 and G12H30 anniversary. After selling them (too many cabs, lol) I may have to concede that it was the AMP that sounded thin and not the 2X12. Overall, the 4X12 on its own sounded fantastic and was a helluva bargain, as was the 2X12. I have since picked up an Earcandy Buzzbomb, and while it is pricy, it performs like a 4X12 and looks great. I don't think you can go wrong with any Avatar cabinet though. I've never played through one of the newer ones so I can't comment on those, but the older style is a nice cab. Probably the nicest cabinet you're going to get in that price range, loaded up and tolexed with your choice of a few colors and grilles.

Re: Avatar cabs

while I've only bought a couple of Hellatone 30s from Dave, I will say that the last time I checked, he had excellent feedback on Ebay .. something like over 2,000 replies with 100% positive

I've talked to him on the phone a couple of times, and he's been very informative and prompt with his service.
