well lately i've been looking at splawns and as much as i want one i dont really have the money.. so i started looking at avatars and they seem affordable and i'm wondering how they are compared to splawns? are these cabs good for heavy metal? and if so what speakers should i go with? i want to get a 4x12 by the way and it will be for my Peavey JSX.

Re: Avatar Cabs

this may not help much - but here is the cab I am gassing for:

I like 2x12 since I can fit it in my small car, and it is ported, so it optimizes sound; I would get the buzzbomb and customize with the metal diamond plate for aesthetics

Re: Avatar Cabs

Alot of people like Avatar cabs, I have yet to try one. Dude, don't get a 4x12 though unless you absolutely need it. A 212 will almost always do and a 412 is just no fun to carry around.

Re: Avatar Cabs

i'll live carrying around a 412.. 95% of the time it stays in my shed anyhow.. and i usually have 2 people carry it when needed, besides.. it must have an improvement in the sound quality would it not?

Well the improvement to sound quality depends. If you're playing loud enough to be actually pushing the 412 speakers then it would be usefull. I don't know how loud you play for gigs and whatnot.

Re: Avatar Cabs

I personally wouldn't gig with less than 4 12" speakers, but I'd be competing with a deathmetal drummer, another guitarist, a bassist, and cookie monster.

My Avatar is the best cabinet I've had the pleasure of owning - the only cabinet's I've liked the sound of better were VHT and Orange, both with V30's.

Re: Avatar Cabs

haha a cookie monster... thats great.

well you seem to know your **** when it comes to metal.. what should i load the avatar 4x12 with? i want something far from piercing high end and that is far from harsh sound in any way.

Re: Avatar Cabs

V30 all the way. It's the standard for a reason.

Re: Avatar Cabs

hmm.. alright, but what about those G12H30's?
i heard someone say that the V30's can be kinda harsh.. it was in his mesa cab.

Re: Avatar Cabs

I had an Avatar 2x12 with one V30 and one G12H30 for several years, and now one of my friends owns it. It has always been a killer cabinet, durable and sounds fantastic.

+1

I've got the 4x12 slant with 4 V30s. They sound great, and the cab is very well built. Send an email to Dave at avatar...he can help you decide if you're unsure on speakers. Their customer service is top notch.

Re: Avatar Cabs

I own a couple of Avatars: one open 2x12 and one closed back. They're definitely solid gear but far from my favorite. Without going too booteek, I think the Mesa Recto cabs are among the best for hard stuff.

FWIW, I'd put my ported Earcandy 2x12 up against just about any 4x12. It sounds huuuuge with great low end and moves enough air to fill a big room.

Re: Avatar Cabs

i don't play metal but i have 2 avatar cabs, soon to be 3, and i love them all

are you a rythm player or lead?

for rythm i'd go with an X of v30's or governors & swamp thangs

for lead i'd prolly go all governors, they're like v30's but not harsh

people like the g12t75/v30 combo for metal, too

Re: Avatar Cabs

I'm trying to decide on what 2X12 to get for my DSL 50. As much as I'd like to try a 4X12 I think it's pretty much out of the picture due to my bad back.

The thing I like about a Marshall 4X12 is that solid depth that it provides. Anyone know what 2X12 cabs come close to that depth that I'm talking about? I'm open for all suggestions regardlass of who the maker is. Thanks.

Ear Candy Buzz Bomb.

After I bought mine, I sold my 4x12. There's also an option on the Buzz Bomb for roller wheels and an extending handle so you can pull it like a suitcase.

Major +1. Same here--sold two of my 4X12s after buying the Earcandy Buzzbomb.

Re: Avatar Cabs

I really like my Avatar cab. It's a 2X12 semi open back with the V30 and G12H30. It sounds better than the 4X12 Marshall I had with GT75's (Which are good sounding speakers). 4X12's are cool and all, but they are a PITA to carry or fit in a car. I'd rather have two 2X12's one open, one closed back.

Re: Avatar Cabs

I understand those ear candy cabs are really, really good. However, for the $$ I would purchase the Splawn cab if I was spending that kind of $$.

Also, if you can find a deal on a beat up Marshall cab, Splawn can refurb it, upgrade the wiring and put a new back on it for not a lot of $$. Might be worth checking into if you get a steal on a used Marshall.
