Re: Awesome find!- NM 1957 Goldtop with case candy

I'd have been afraid of having it authenticated, because any dealer that saw it would jump in with an offer.

I can imagine myself trying to raise the money, and it sure wouldn't be easy, unless I found an investor to convince.

I'm dying to know the purchase price and final selling price. I know he'll never tell though. I'd also like to know what year it went from the father to daughter......after 94, I'd imagine. So, the old man didn't play it from 57 to the 90's?

Re: Awesome find!- NM 1957 Goldtop with case candy

With respect, regardless of anyone's comments (yours included) and whether or not they are "accurate"........

With respect, I can absolutely vouch for the accuracy of my comments, I own the guitar.

Now normally I wouldn't give a ****, but seeing how:

1) $six figures were being thrown around
2) The provenance of the post (mylespaul.com)
3) The inaccuracy of the seller's statements "It's one of the few chances to see EXACTLY what a 50's Les Paul looked like as near new as possible."
4) AlexR jumping in to defend his crappy forum (with his usual canned "banned much?" comment)

In answer to your points:

1) the price of the guitar is between me and the seller, what has been "thrown around" is mere speculation;
2) the mylespaul.com forum is to accuracy what a brothel is to intimacy and fidelity. My only complaint about the entire deal is that pictures ended up on that site;
3) Eric's comment is accurate insofar as the guitar didn't have a screw turned when purchased. The fretwear is minimal. The frets and nibs are precisely the same as my other "under the bed" early PAF guitars.
4) Being banned from that particular forum should be regarded as a badge of honour.

Hopefully that puts and end to the speculation.

if you want me to remove the pics here, just let me know.

And thanks for giving us info you did, despite the conspiracy theories//McCarthy-ism. Congrats on an amazing guitar!

Re: Awesome find!- NM 1957 Goldtop with case candy

perhaps gibson would be willing to buy or lease the guitar for a museum piece?

Re: Awesome find!- NM 1957 Goldtop with case candy

Wow, so there's an example of multiple refrets that actually preserved the binding nibs.

Yes they (skilled dudes of course) can work around the nibs and save them, but the upcharge to do so makes it very expensive... the cheap route being of course to just cut the nibs.

Sometimes Gibson would just replace the entire (bound) fretboard (quicker solution); which is why there are instances of anachronistic inlays, etc.. for a given vintage guitar.

Welcome to the forum.
Any chance of sharing pics of your collection? We're all bored of seeing everyone's lowly post 50's rubbish! :D

Did you ever think that if you actually had something worthwhile for others to read, you wouldn't need to solely rely on pictures?

Having taken a look at your "forum", should I presume the post above is a master-class in irony?

You posted:

"Listen to this steaming turd of a story over on mylespaul.com about a '57 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop that so happened to be sitting under a bed.

Dude states over and over "1957 Gibson Les Paul Standard "Goldtop" guitar in near mint condition."

One problem is, there's no fret end nibs. That means at best, it was refretted

The sheer depth of your ignorance is matched only by the magnitude of your ego.

You truly are a half-wit.
