Crazy 8, 59, Demon, with a wide variety of magnets. The Custom in its stock form just pushes the amp exactly the way I hear it in my head. For now, anyway. I’m sure I’ll do another unnecessary surgery again and eventually realize the Custom is right again.

Been there, done that. It goes well with a 59n. For a ceramic pickup its livlier than a SuperD in a LP, the top end is richer & can be controlled with the tone knob well which is nice making it quite versatile for single notes, the mids are just about right to blend with a variety of od pedals. Its the one pickup that I dont like in strat bodies, the sh11 shines there.

I have this theory that the Custom is tailor made for enormous heavy guitars. The Custom sounds titanically massive in my big heavy explorer type guitar (it's a neck thru Jackson Kelly) . It's almost a perfect sound. In my Ibanez RG, it's good, but not such a great sound . Kinda harsh.

Perhaps it is a genre thing? My 59 loaded LP sounds great, but it does not deliver those 80's tones like my Custom/Jazz LP. I will not part with either guitar.
For me, it is this:
I am a child of the 80's and the Custom delivers those tones.

I don't understand why it doesn't receive more marketing attention. I think it's my favorite Seymour Duncan humbucker that doesn't come from the Custom Shop, but I never hear it mentioned outside the forum.

The Custom's a versatile platform for a variety of magnets. I think it would sell well with an A8 which is popular here for it's many virtues. I prefer it over the 3 stock versions. My favorite is with an UOA5, which is nice for classic rock & blues. The 'best' magnet depends on what kind of music you're playing.

I find it strange that the JB is always pushed so much and comes stock in so many guitars when the Custom, IMO, is a much more versatile pickup in terms of guitar types and music styles it'll work.
