Back to the Future Gibson guitar story

Me, like every other nerdy guitar player has noticed that the Gibson Marty plays in Back to the Future didn't exist yet in 1955.... Heck we know the Seth Lover designed Humbuckers wouldn't appear for a few years... Here's the story of how that malapropism made it into a rather big budget movie.

The art director didn’t mind taking artistic license and wanted to know what I had in stock.

And he's never heard the end of it.

That portion of the story was set in Nov '55 so Strats would have been about 18 months old at that point and customers did order one-off custom colors occasionally. It would've been period accurate to have a Red Strat. Plus it would've been more similar to the Ibanez Marty has at the audition scene.

But I gotta admit that Gibson is a better fit with the band and man does it look good on film.

I work a mile from Norman's Rare Guitars. Out of all the guitar dealers, more amazing guitars have gone through his hands than any other.
