Back with a soft blues

I really thought I'd be back showing my new YCV20WR but I hate it to the point I put it for sale. So I'm now hunting for another YCV40, which I liked so much and miss a lot.

In the meantime, I tried something that gave a surprising result. My Behringer DI box with cab sim and a Boss DS-1. Mind you, I generally hate the DS-1 with an amp, but recorded this way, it's pretty cool. No honky sound.

So here it is, a simple melody inspired by a soft backtrack to kick off the weekend!

That was great! Very smooth, with just a touch of "edge" to it.

This is definitely something I'll play along with . . . tomorrow. When everyone isn't asleep.

I have to admit some of the tones guys get with direct recordings through various devices are pretty damn good. I have some very pricey amps, mics,and guitars and still am struggling to get the recorded sounds right.
Not bad tone!

Sounds great man! You seem to have matured a lot as a player because it's hard to stay melodic through a whole piece without wanting to go mad all over it or losing direction, and this solo is really tastefully done and well structured.

Yes, this tone is good for direct recording and I also have a hard time getting a tone like that with an amp and a mic. The ds-1 for one thing is very honky and metallic with an amp. I may have it mod by John down the road.

I came to the point where I think there is two tone worlds: recorded tone and live tone. Two completely diffrent worlds. What sounds good live often sound like crap if you put a mic directly in front of it.

Nuntius: thanks man, I really think I'm getting better, probably because although I've been playing since the early 80s, I've never played as often as now. So I guess practice is the key word. And I also realized that my strent is on the melodic side of things. Since I'll never be able to shred, I try to concentrate on soloing with a sense of direction. And pull off a couple of blazing licks here and there to spice it up.

The backing track is on the way guys, so you can have fun with it.

Oh yeah, and nobody asked, but this is a DMZ FRED in the bridge position, my favorite DMZ bridge PU.

Yes, when I sold you my other Fred, I only had it in the neck position before, but I tried it a couple of weeks in the bridge position before selling it, and it impressed me so much that I decided to get back to it. Very toneful PU

It's only 1:30, because to be blunt the other half really did suck so I cut it :laugh2:.

I've been trying to get a really fat open OD sound out of the port and this is as far as I've got :/ . I'm still having problems with the sound in Cubase so I've had to export it to MP3 a few times and listen back to do my mixing like that (hence the really long filename )

It's done on my RS530 with the Custom/FRED combo. Played with my fingers, the part that sounds like a pick is actually my nail.

Sometimes I really wish the trem on this guitar didn't suck! It's fixed down (springs tight so it doesn't budge) but I wanna put a wilkinson on it one day, because I liked the one I tried. I think you could pull up on it too without having a route for it because of the way it sits on the posts? I dunno I'll have to do more research into it.

I should be working for my parents sometime in the next two weeks so hopefully I can get enough cash for one.

I'm not sure if I'll keep the combo though, I love both pickups individually but they are EQ'd really differently. It's hard to get the tone right on the custom, and keep the fred from sounding a little mushy on the bass strings.

Then again my strings are getting old :laugh2:

Nice nuntius, this is not an easy piece to do on the fly. I played over it for a couple of hours off and on before coming up with my take.

And I know what you mean about the Fred... it's a little fat so you have to set your rig brighter, and then the Custom is too bright. The Fred work well in the neck position with very fat DMZ pups, like the Super D, Air zone, Tone Zone or Breed.

If you change it, go for a Pearly Gates. It's wonderful with a Custom.

If you keep the Fred, then change the Custom for a fat DMZ. Super Distortion is the more vintage sounding in terms of classic rock.

This is something you'll jungle with for a while believe me. The best is to have more than one guitar and many combinations for every circumstances. But that requires a lot of money
