Re: Bad Gibson amp

I've heard the Goldtone combos before...sound good. Never seen the head version. That auction is really low ($365.03 at my viewing) and says "It only comes with a power cord." No tubes then? Still a great deal for the winner if the bids don't get crazy at the end.

Re: Bad Gibson amp

I wonder where they were built exactly. Sounds as if it's very good to be honest.

Re: Bad Gibson amp

I think these are actually trace elliot built amps? if i remember right.

the loops were super nice...but the price tag was not.

Re: Bad Gibson amp

I have one of these made in 2001 by Trace Elliot. It sounds "Vox"ish with more headroom on Preamp (channel) 1 and lot more saturated dirt on Preamp 2. The low end can get a little tubby especially on Preamp 2. The Boost can be used on either channel but is the most effective on Preamp 1. I replaced all of the top hat knobs with speed knobs as they are easier to read at an angle. The key to this amp is the 5 button foot-switch which allows the simultaneous use of both Preamps. Those foot-switches can be expensive and didn't come standard with the amp. I've owned it for 4 years and it has been reliable considering how it is constructed. Everything except for the power switch and AC mains are mounted on PCB's. They all seem fairly robust but I prefer the pots and speaker connections to be hardwired for easier replacement.
Here are some pics of the amp sans the cabinet.

Re: Bad Gibson amp

I owned a Gibson Lark amp for a short period of time and traded it on a solid state Univox. Yes, I was young and stupid. What the F**K is that?

That's terrifying. And I'm not even a tone guru. You can listen to me play and tell that! I think I'd rather own a Lab Series.

Re: Bad Gibson amp

I see. So when called a Velocette or Speed Twin by Trace Elliot then there's respect? This is the same amp! Have any of you ever played through any of the amps of this family? They sound awesome. I don't keep amps very long that don't cut it. Other than pots connected to the PCB (Marshall been doing this since the early 80's) and the speaker outs, this is constructed like many non PTP quality amps made today. At least they use separate boards for each major function. Take a look inside a Marshall, Mesa, Engl, Framus, or Diezel made in the past few years. But I see this thread is headed for another Gibson bash fest regardless of how it sounds or performs.

Re: Bad Gibson amp

I got about 20 minutes on a used on at GC one day, and it was one of the best tones I've ever heard. TONS of depth.

Re: Bad Gibson amp

Beautiful amp and they sound terrific. I had a lot of issues with Trace bass amps and that scared me away with the pricetag they carried new. I'd get one now if I found one local.
