bad jams! what I hate about jam sessions.

Just got back from a jam session. it was so bad I want to cry. I hate jazz jams. Here are a few of my most hated things about jams:
1. What we call jazz standarts is a conspiracy. Doesn't exist. No two jazz players have common knowledge of more then four or five standarts.
2. Why do they have to play the same piece for 20 minutes???? isn't one solo enough for every player?
3. Competition between guitar players and competition between drummers. O.K we got it you can run on a few scales. yeah.. you're faster the Yngwie... we got it... could you do something original.
4. bad bassists should be shot from close range. no mercy.

I havn't been or listend to a jam I like in years.

Anything else?

In my band we jam constantly, great way to form songs. But keep in mind we try to keep a band perspective not a 'me me me' thing. Even when its time to solo, its still about the band perspective. Each player does his solo(be it Keys, Bass, Guitar or Drums) and the other guys are digging it. A jam should be very open minded. And no playing like you instrument is an part of your..... Well, you get it.

We used to have long jams with nothing but grooving away in one of my old bands...no friggin' solo's!
Just a relentless pursue of groove
Much more fun, themes would be played by the keyboardplayer, or someone else, rhythmhooks, all kinds of stuff, jams can be great!

A jam band is one thing... I'm talking about get togethers of a few players who don't have to know each other to well.
After tonight I'm talking about players who I don't want to know at all...

Ahh I see. See, my band actually is a Jam band :smokin: I definatly know what you mean with people who dont know each other that gets so annoying it hurts. Even more so when they think they know what they are playing(style wise) and are waaayy off. Like laying a two-hand tapping solo over a simple blues jam.

And Rid, that sounds fun as hell.

A two hand tapping solo during a blues song is not the scariest thing.
Drummers who take a solo in the middle of the head breaking everyboy's rhythm and then tell you they have everything under control and that you should practice more iwth a metronom... is what I'm talking about.
Guitar players who go for an hour and a half of noodling on the guitar...
Bassists who decide to get up and leave in the middle of the song because they want to talk to someone...

I usually have a good link with jazz players when jamming. We know when to switch it up, we have a look to give when we are done soloing, and we know how to handle random players who go on too long. We also know how to play our stuff well enough to educate random players joining us without sheet music.

Im a really crappy jazz guitarist, so I get all.. chicago blues style. Ah well.. Jazz university, here I come...
