Bad JB, and wiring query....

I have a jb humbucker sh-4...for over 18 years... my rig began sounding thin and brittle...checked tubes, pedals cables...finally tracked it down to the jb...traded 'em out from another guitar....yep, that's it... Can the bad JB be fixed?

Arwin from Seymour Duncan replied:

Generally so, it may be abroken coil, in which case you would notice hum and one side of your pickup would not read, or that the magnet was unintentionally degaussed

Rewind / repair can be ordered here

My reply, and query ( if anyone has knowledge of this) :

Thx Arwin,

Seems quicker to just buy a new jb….which I did  Next situation…. I have H S H set up … SH6-N / STK4 S4m Stack Plus / SH-4 JB , 5 way Blade selector, one volume, one tone. Can’t find a wiring diagram for this set up on your site.
Do I have the wrong middle pickup (rwrp stack plus)…one that can’t or shouldn’t be used this way? My goal in changing out the original fender middle single coil was to avoid buzz, which happens in a particular venue,
caused by …who knows…neon lights or something. The buzz happens in any position (2, 3, 4) that involves the middle single coil Fender pickup. Humbuckers selected alone in positions 1 and 5 have no buzz. Won’t be back in that club for a few weeks, so I won’t know until then if it worked. I also wanted to have a complete Duncan set up, instead of having to reverse wire the Duncans because of the Fender middle single coil, so I installed the
STK4 S4m Stack Plus.

Am considering changing the STK4 S4m Stack Plus in middle position to a STK-S6 Custom Stack Plus for more output. I see it is not rwrp, which I’m not sure if I even need if the stack design eliminates the buzz.

I used this wiring diagram to go by even though it doesn’t show a humbucker in the neck. Please suggest the proper one if I’ve done something wrong. It shows a single coil size humbucker in the bridge, which I’m assuming is wired the same way as the full size JB I have. https://docs.google.com/gview?embed...content/uploads/2016/05/2STK_SCH_5W_1V_1T.pdf
The bridge humbucker is shown as having the red and white wires taped off, but doesn’t say if they should be soldered together (like in many diagrams).

Thanks for your direction!

Re: Bad JB, and wiring query....

Yes, rewinding the pickup is probably the best way.

The rwrp thing concerning the hum is only a thing in conncetion with real single coil. Together with humbucker it could cause an out of phase problem. The cure for an oop problem is simply swapping leads.

But another thought concerning this particular club. Excessive humming could be caused by a bad electric house system.

Welcome to the Forum!

With your original rw/rp single coil, was it out of phase with the original neck and bridge pickups? Do you auto-split the middle with a coil cut in both humbuckers? If you have no intention to split anything, then a regular polarity single will work. The only time I'd use rw/rp middle in this setup is if you were trying to get hum cancelling with either of the humbucker's split coils.

BTW, the old JB is worth fixing. Old pickups are cool!
