Bad/old preamp tube = more buzzy tone?

Ok, I think I figured out the buzzyness problem in my avth150! Please read on and tell me if I'm right!

Ok, so I got a avt150h (the vs2000) and a AVT20 (vs2000) and a 1960B cab from the 80's loaded with celestion G12T-75's. Ok so here we go....

A month or two ago I gout the head and cab off of a guy in a giggin Death Metal band. Now I've used it for my gigs and have been pretty happy with it exept I couldnt seem to find my exact OD settings because I noticed it sounded buzzy almost like an extra distortion you know? It sounded like a distortion sitting ontop of my tone. Well anyways I had been gettign frustrated with it and I tried thousands of EQ combinations, still havign the same effect. Well I think I finally found out why...I need a new preamp tube. Heres how I figured it out..

First off the guy said hes had it for a few years (cant remember exactly how long, around 4-5 I beleive he said) and he is the origional owner (talking botu the head here). Now a preamp tube after 4 years being used alot (it was the only amp he had so he used it for practising at home too) should need replacing right? Well anyways I remembered my AVT20 has an ext cab output so I plugged it in. I've had the AVT20 for a year and 6 months brand new so its preamp tube would (theoretically at least) be fine...

Well there it was!!! The buzzyness was gone!!! At one point I thought it was the speakers 'case I've heard they can be harsh but NO, there is was, no bussyness sitting ontop of my tone! I was very exited, so I plugged the head bak in and it was back, I listened closely and it sounds like distortion sitting ontop of my tone and thinner. Anyways I'm goign to look into this because I knwo its not that expensive but does this sound right to you guys? Heres a thing from marshalls website:

Quote:
Other pre-amp valve related problems include; lack of volume, loss of bottom end, thinning of the sound and loss of all top-end frequencies. Again it is best to replace all the pre-amp valves at the same time.

lack of volume> well I don't really knwo since It's always been like this but the avt20 plugged into the cab is really loud as well so I don't know.

loss of bottom end/thinning of sound> mm hmm

loss of top end> not really lol

So what do you guys htink? Tiem for a change? Worth a shot anyways isn't it? And woudl it be possible for me to do it myself (I'm pretty good with electronics).

Thanks for all your help and what kind would you reccomend? I want to keep the same type (12ax7) but brands? I know one preamp tune cant make the hugest difference but I think this is the problem.

Re: Bad/old preamp tube = more buzzy tone?

I would suggest the Tung Sol reissues, chinese 12ax7c's, or sovtek lps tubes. Those all work pretty good for high gain. The tube should be easy enough to change on your own, just don't know how you'll get to it. I don't remember if I heard it was hard to change tubes in them or not. But it's easy just pull out, rock back and forth if necessary. Put the tube in making sure the pins match of the sockets holes and push it in. Definitely try changing the pre-amp tube.

+1 to the Chinese 12AX7 tubes. They can be had for dirt cheap on Ebay even, I got a few there and they were great.

I think thats what I'm goign to try, if It doesnt work I'm out like $10, big whoop.

I could also switch the valves from my 20 to the head but since I've never opened up an amp before I'f prefer to just open one and not both! Thanks for your help I think I'm going to try that out.
