Re: bare knuckle pickups
crusty philtrum's got a couple sets of singles in his strats, i liked them. hopefully he can shed a bit more light on this?
Hi
I don't have any experience with BKP humbuckers, but i have 2 sets of Strat pickups from BKP....the 'Apache' set and the 'Irish Tours'. In fact, i just ordered a new set of Apaches tonight to replace the ones i already have.....simply because my first Apache set has staggered poles and I hear an uneven string balance on my 10" radius board. I have become convinced that staggered poles only suit the old 7 1/2" radius Fender fretboards and anything flatter works better with flat poles...just my opinion, because of hearing the dominance of the middle two strings with the stagger.
The quality is outstanding. The sounds are magnificent. The Apaches are Alnico 3 and give a '50's style Strat sound. Yes, they can sound like Hank B Marvin, but they are a class act for all Strat styles, and being a little fuller in the middle, they would be ideal for Blackmore and Trower sounds. I have the baseplate on the bridge pickup, and have ordered the new set with a bridge baseplate as well.
The Irish Tours are based on Rory Gallagher's sound, like an A5 pickup with a little more bite and edge to them, but not enough to detract from the classic Strat sounds. They have enough 'push' to work the front of an amp (not talking metal here, if you're familiar with Rory's tone you'll get the idea).
Both sets have a wonderful three-dimensional quality which really shines when playing clean through a tube amp. I think it is important to be using a good tube amp with pickups like these to really hear what they have to offer (to my ears, tubes seem capable of reproducing depth and 'three-dimension-ality' better than solid-state). This detail of sound only helps when using driven or dirty sounds. The trade-off might be that they could be unforgiving of sloppy playing, unless you like to hear your slopiness in full-colour, three-dimensional glory (it works for me, hahahaha).
These pickups might make an average guitar sound better, but i'm inclined to think they are better in a good instrument, something that already has character and resonance. I don't know for certain, but i feel that the scatterwinding is responsible for the depth and extra dimension to the sound.
As i said, i have no personal experience of BKP humbuckers, but i see no reason why they won't have similar qualities, except obviously the humbucker version of these qualities. I do most of my critical listening with a clean sound, as i'm a believer that all good sounds are based on having a good clean tone to begin with. These pickups are not cheap, and i feel that they may not be worth the investment before you have a decent guitar and tube amp. But after that....that is when you will really be able to hear what these pickups have to offer. Some of it is subtle, but once you hear the subtle differences, regular production pickups seem to sound rather flat and two-dimensional by comparrison.
In terms of pickups from SD, it would be unfair to compare the BKP's to anything but the Antiquity models...it seems that there is a big jump in price between regular production pickups and scatterwound models, but my ears hear a difference and there's no going back. As someone said somewhere on the 'net....your guitar sounds better even when it's not plugged in. That's how they make me feel.
