Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell Steve Stevens Signature Set..Why Didn't He Just Call Seymour?

I don't get it man. I was reading an interview with Steve Stevens in this month's Musicians Hotline. Check out the last couple of lines of the interview. Why didn't he just call up Seymour?

MH: Speaking of big crunchy rhythm tones, let’s talk about Bare Knuckle Pickups, and the release the Rebel Yell Steve Stevens signature humbucker set. I’d heard you were using a Nailbomb Bomb for some time as well. What was your take on that?

Steve: I’ve always been in search of way to better my tone and make my guitar sound bigger. Then I stumbled upon Bare Knuckles. I’d seen an ad in a British guitar magazine, and something about it grabbed me. I’d never heard of them, so I went online and read about Tim Mills, the president of the company. It seemed right. He was using materials that were the same as what were available back then, in what is now considered the holy grail of humbucker pickups: the Gibson PAF, which is the original “Patent Applied For.” If those materials were not available, Tim would commission manufacturers to make them. That is dedication, right there. Plus, he’s a player -- a really good player. At first I wondered, “How I can communicate what I’m looking for to someone who doesn’t use this stuff?” So I e-mailed him, and then I ordered a set. I got the original set— from the Mule Series—which is basically a Patent Applied For with a bit more gain to it. I loved the pickups as soon as I got them, and I could tell by looking at them that they were going to be good. The biggest compliment I could pay to Bare Knuckles is the fact that suddenly your guitar sounds in tune. From a guy who plays primarily Les Paulstyle guitars, that has always been an issue because of the scale length. These pickups are just harmonically correct, so the notes ring and live in the same world as each other. With a lot of pickups I use the notes kind of sound separate. There’s always that problem with the G-string being very difficult to intonate correctly once you play a bar chord. So, the role it plays in the chord can kind of waiver. As soon as I used Bare Knuckle pickups, that wasn’t a problem. So, I stayed in touch with Tim. I said, “Look, I’m going out on the road for eight months. How would you like to develop a signature pickup?” Each week he’d send me a different winding, a different composite, a different magnet structure or a different type of wire. After about seven incarnations we settled on a pickup that ended up being what the original Seymour Duncan JB was, but without my knowing it beforehand – I remember when I first bought the Duncan JB. I thought it was a fantastic pickup.

I guess he didn't know that Seymour has a Custom Shop.

I would email Tim from BK before I took that as the truth. He told me that BKs don't have that certain mid-spike a certain pickup is known for, so I really doubt it sounds like a JB.

The JB model in production isn't the same as the one originally created for Jeff Beck, from what I've heard.

I don't know, I'd love to hear Evan's thoughts on it. He said Warren's "old JB" sounds like a JB.

Many say the JB is a very very picky pup and sounds bad in quite a few guitar, but sounds amazing in quite a few as well.

I'd like to hear it, too. I've heard that it was different, and the Custom Shop offers the original or Prototype JB. If it was the same thing, why would they even offer it in the Custom Shop? That'd basically be a JB with a jacked up price.

Also, as far as why he didn't just call Seymour, he said it was completely unintentional that it ended up sounding like a JB.

Just goes to show ya...the JB rocks. In the right guitar, that is. I have it in my ash Strat right now; it's not quite as good in that as it has been in my alder Strats. 250K pots take care of the EQ, IMO.

Maybe so, but if he loved the original so much, he could've just given Seymour a call.

Go over to the BK forums and listen to the clips...it doesn't sound like a JB at all.

Re: Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell Steve Stevens Signature Set..Why Didn't He Just Call Seymour?

Well. It's in the mind. The thought that you get what you pay for. Being a professional, he would rather have a 300 dollar signature pickup, than a simple rewinding of a 70 dollar one...

Re: Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell Steve Stevens Signature Set..Why Didn't He Just Call Seymour?

the rebel yell is NOTHING.. absolutely NOTHING like a JB.

it is 10000000x more harmonicaly rich and doesnt have the super spike. much smoother and responcive.

i played a set in a MM axis and let me tell ya, i'd buy the guitar w/ the set in a heartbeat.they are simply jawdropping.

there is a certain something in BK pups that you dont find in others, they are far bigger sounding and richer. if you dont believe me, fine, but dont diss em till you have tried them.

they are pretty expencive (for you guys) over here they arent realy that much diferent price vise from a duncan (except if you go totaly nuts like me and get a SICK cover)

+1.... and Tim Mills is very knowledgeable about the history of making pickups and what it takes to get a certain tone. Also, he's a very cool guy, not that it matters to making pickups, I just thought I'd throw that in as well.:laugh2: He'll actually talk with you about the best pickup for your set up before you break the bank account buying Bare Knuckle pickups. That in my opinion is excellent. Not often you get to talk to the man in charge at any company.

I didn't see ANYTHING negative about them. Personally, I've never tried them and I've only heard great things about them, so you won't hear anything bad coming from me.

It just seems to me that if you go to the trouble of having a big pickup maker wind a pup for you then you probably have a certain tone in mind that you're going for. Maybe not, but I know if I called up the Duncan Custom Shop or anyone elses I'm not going to say, "make me something and I'll see if I like it." So, most likely, this pickup ended up sounding pretty close to the tone he was originally hearing in his head. And if that was close to what he remembers a JB sounding like it seems like a long road to get something simple. I don't think it matters if it really sounds like a JB to us or not, just that HE thought it sounded like one.

Re: Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell Steve Stevens Signature Set..Why Didn't He Just Call Seymour?

It's interesting what he's saying - as far as I know the Rebell Yell bridge model is ~14K, maybe that's where the extra harmonics come from. If I remember that well, it's the new version of the Holy Diver (~16K) and the Nailbomb (also ~16K) that are considered the "JB-alternatives". But yeah, you can definitely hear in the heavy RY clip that it's a hot Alnico V pickup with organic quality. Hearing's quite subjective, isn't it.

also, if you ask me, the sound clips posted by some of the users on the bkp forum suck. i dont listen to them at all after LGS, cos i know they aint bringing the true pickup through.

if its a song, it's a diferent matter, but as a pickup sample, a lot of them fail.

cant wait till ben has more pups and phil is able to record again.
