Bass amp as basis for a pedal rig?

Anyone ever use a bass amp head as a basis for a pedal rig? I've been thinking about using a nice one (Eden, SWR, etc) with some good cabs with regular guitar speakers. Lots of clean headroom, lightweight, etc. I could then get my OD and other sounds from pedals.

Anyone else ever try this? How did it turn out?

My dad had a huge Peavey head for many years. Played bass and guitar through it.

I'd stay away from using bass speakers- they're not cool for guitar.

Says the guy with 4 cabs with 5x10+4x15+2 horns, and 3 heads with 2100w of power. Add it up.

I used a Hartke SS/Tube preamp head (200 watts) through a Marshall 4x10 once at a gig when I blew a fuse in my bassman. The cleans were a bit sterile, but a Tubescreamer sounded monstrous with proper EQ'ing.

I used a Bassman 50 with, what I believe, was a dual showman cab. It had 2 15's in it...wasn't real clean, but was a fat tone machine.

A number of the bass and "instrument" tube amplifiers of the 60's and 70's are well regarded as guitar amps when used with pedals. They are well liked by the Stoner dudes because they are loud punchy and darker than normal guitar rigs. Specifically the Marshall bass heads and the Ampeg heads.

And don't forget the Sunn model T.

When I was younger, and still living at my dad's house, my rig was a combination of a crapload of pedals, a Peavey Rockmaster preamp, a Roland JC-120 and a Fender Super Reverb. It sounded fantastic. One day, I decided to add my dad's old Gibson bass amp to the mix. It was a low wattage (20-ish?) with a single 15" in the cabinet, and I cranked it.

I went from saying, "Wow, this sounds great" to "This is ****ing tits" :D

I have a 60 watt solid state Fender Bassman combo amp. It has a 12" Eminence special design speaker and a Motorolla tweeter. I use it frequently with my electric guitar, acoustic, and my baritone; I also hook it up to my different guitar cabs at different times. I have 50 pedals which I hook up in different combinations at different times, and the bass amp provides a perfect platform. It's fun playing through an amp with such a wide frequency spectrum and no gain stages.
